年輕的修女瑪麗亞，生性活潑，愛好唱歌。她經常溜出修道院，在美麗的大自然里盡情地歌唱。
一天，她又在野外嬉遊，歌唱，竟忘了時間，等她想起回修道院做日常功課，已經太晚了。
瑪麗亞一回修道院，便連忙向院長承認錯誤，但院長卻通知她必須離開修道院。因為院長剛和院里幾個年長的嬤嬤們商議，認為活潑好動的瑪麗亞不適宜在規矩嚴格的修道院里當修女，院里安排瑪麗亞到一個名叫特拉普的上校家去當家庭教師。
特拉普是奧地利帝國退役的海軍軍官，妻子已去世多年，留下了七個孩子。瑪麗亞來到特拉普的別墅，特拉普態度生硬地接見了她，告訴她："你已是第十二任家庭教師，以前的十一位家庭教師都沒呆長。"他要求教師對孩子們嚴加管教，要有嚴格的紀律。"至於游戲，那是不必考慮的。"

幾天後特拉普帶著男爵夫人回來了。孩子們不喜歡這位未來的新媽媽。因為她太一本正經，對他們一點不溫柔，他們寧可和瑪麗亞在一起。可是，特拉普卻不習慣瑪麗亞的教育方法，他要瑪麗亞重回修道院。他把瑪麗亞找來談話，說明了自己的意思。正在這時，窗外傳來了孩子們純潔的歌聲：

特拉普與瑪麗亞的關系日益親密，冷清了多年的房子里，現在出現了歌聲、歡笑乃至愛情。這一切，被男爵夫人覺察。為了維護自己的女主人地位，她親自找瑪麗亞談話，要她中斷與特拉普的愛情，並要她主動要求回修道院。
善良的瑪麗亞順從了，她離開了孩子們，離開了特拉普，回修道院去了。就在這時，德國法西斯的魔爪正伸進奧地利。
