甄子丹出生在廣東，兩歲時前往香港。他在那裡住到11歲，隨後前往馬薩諸塞州的波士頓。在那裡，甄子丹度過了他的少年時光。他的母親麥寶嬋是一位世界著名武術和太極宗師，創辦了馳名國際的中國武術研究所。因此，武術成為甄子丹生命中的重要影響因素。自幼的腳步逐漸引他走上那條人跡稀少的寂寞探索道路，而甄子丹一生的命運，或許亦從此註定。不過最初，甄子丹學習的是古典鋼琴，喜歡蕭邦，音樂成為他生命中的另一靈感來源。他的父親甄雲龍，是一份國際性中文報紙，星島日報的波士頓編輯，會演奏小提琴以及和小提琴音色相似的中國弦樂器二胡。他的母親會唱女高音。年輕的甄子丹對韻律纖細敏銳的感覺最終融入了他所導演的影片，將氣質和深度加諸其中。，

幾乎是從他剛會走路開始，甄子丹的母親就開始在武術的氛圍中訓練她的兒子。在母親的栽培下，甄子丹精通傳統和現代的中國武術和太極功夫，深諳各種內功外功心法。作為一個住在波士頓中國城的少年，和別的年輕人一樣，甄子丹幾乎看過能看到的每一部功夫片，然而和別人不同，看了傅聲(FuSheng)，狄龍(TiLung)，李小龍(BruceLee)，成龍(JackieChan)的影片，出了電影院甄子丹能夠分毫不差地精確模仿方才電影里看到的動作。有時他甚至逃課一整天，一連看好幾部片子。對於武術知識的渴求以及一貫反叛的個性，令得甄子丹逐步學習並且精通多種不同風格的武術。同時，他還和自己的朋友交換心得，亦曾去別的學校，以求探學不同的內容。感受到武術的實力和威力之後，甄子丹在探求武術真諦的道路上執著前行。
