影片開始於1861年美國南北戰爭爆發前夕，喬治亞州一個名叫塔拉（Tara）的庄園。斯佳麗·奧哈拉（Scarlett O'Hara）是庄園主愛爾蘭移民傑拉爾德·奧哈拉（Gerald O'Hara）和妻子埃倫（Ellen）的三個女兒中的長女。她愛上了阿希禮·威爾克斯（Ashley Wilkes），而阿希禮卻選擇了表妹玫蘭妮·漢密爾頓（Melanie Hamilton），並定於次日在12棵橡樹庄園舉行燒烤，同時宣布兩人訂婚。

提姆波頓（Tim Burton）的最新作品《地獄新娘》（Corpse Bride），與十二年前同樣作成黑色基調的Stop-motion動畫電影《聖誕夜驚魂》（The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993）有許多共通點，單就音樂上來說，擔任配樂創作，兼寫詞、曲的丹尼葉夫曼（Danny Elfman）都親自替劇中角色配音、配唱，而且劇中人物的唱做方式，皆頗有音樂劇的質感。《地獄新娘》與《聖誕夜驚魂》故事裡，也都存在著兩個完全不同的世界，配樂創作若要依樣畫葫蘆倒也可行，然而丹尼葉夫曼對兩者投入的概念卻不盡相同。
《聖誕夜驚魂》的Overture，很清楚地展現出葉夫曼與波頓首度合作的Pee Wee's Big Adventure那種歡鬧氣氛，一連串上行音符，配合明顯的鈴聲節拍，帶出高昂情緒，直指聖誕節前夕的時間點。用來與之相對照的歌曲This is Halloween則是劇中萬聖節世界的靈魂所在，三個下行音符，被用來對應Halloween一詞的三個音節，強化音樂動機與故事主題的連結性。清楚確立主題後，This is Halloween與其它幾首歌曲的旋律，就成了整部《聖誕夜驚魂》配樂的主幹。
《地獄新娘》跳脫了這種以歌曲旋律主導配樂的方式。Main Titles一開始即導入一個a小調的哀傷旋律，憂愁的動機不但交代了男主角Victor的心理狀態，往後更透過轉調以及不同的詮釋手法，不斷於電影中再現，是整部配樂最重要的音樂主題，在作品的情緒上，和充滿Oingo Boingo狂氣的《聖誕夜驚魂》有很大不同。雖說葉夫曼亦為這部動畫電影作了幾首歌曲，讓劇中人物發揮，但沒有俗氣地將這個中心旋律也填上歌詞，讓主角高歌一番。波頓和葉夫曼採取更高明的手法，讓Victor配合帶有肖邦「幻想即興曲」（Fantaisie-Impromptu, Op.66）浪漫風格的左手伴奏，在鋼琴上將轉成d小調旋律彈奏出來，讓這個主題首度與主角產生關系。
這樣的音樂伏筆，隨後在The Piano Duet一幕發酵；地獄新娘Emily在鋼琴鍵盤上起了一個與Victor鋼琴主題相關連的旋律，接著Victor加入，將旋律轉化成自己先前彈奏過的主題，開始了兩人的四手聯彈，男女主角一起坐在鋼琴前透過樂音交流，效果比什麼深情的對唱都要來得強烈。
本次葉夫曼擔任配音與配唱的角色，是屬於地獄世界的Bonejangles，該角色不但像《聖誕夜驚魂》的Jack Skellington一樣唱得賣力，還率領Bone Boys大玩搖擺爵士樂，以鬼魂的熱情狂歡，反襯陽間的灰暗色調。Remains of the Day段落中木琴（Xylophone）的音響有相當搶眼的演出效果，如同聖桑「動物狂歡節」（Le Carnaval des Animaux）中的「化石」（Fossils），強調出骸骨相互碰撞的詼諧意象。音樂進行中，肖邦第二號鋼琴奏鳴曲（Piano Sonata No. 2, Op.35）第三樂章的「葬禮進行曲」動機突然被插入，提醒大家這是屬於陰間的狂歡。
The Wedding Song段落也從別的音樂作品挪用了具有象徵意義的旋律。葉夫曼將音樂劇的唱腔與輕歌劇大合唱樣式融合在一起，熱烈的場面對婚禮氣氛的提示已經足夠，卻在音樂行將結束前悄悄地將華格納歌劇《羅恩格林》（Lohengrin）第三幕婚禮進行曲的動機，並合在自己的旋律中，尾聲的音樂諧仿，只為搏君一粲。
音響設計方面，音色輕盈且古意盎然的大鍵琴（Harpsichord）讓時代設定於十九世紀的《地獄新娘》之古代氣息加分不少（雖然那個時代大鍵琴已註定被鋼琴所淘汰）。被一些恐怖電影配樂用到浮濫的管風琴，也出現在作品中（如Victoria's Escape），所幸只是用來調和音樂氛圍，而沒有過度裝神弄鬼；事實上，對於處理鬼怪題材早已建立出一套自我哲學的葉夫曼，亦用不著那樣媚俗。
整體而言，兩部作品雖各具趣味，但《地獄新娘》著實玩出較多的花樣。之所以能夠如此，即因為配樂與劇中的歌曲保持著適當距離，避開被歌曲旋律牽著鼻子走的尷尬，而掙得更大的音樂表現空間，是相較之下的突破。
