美国是新兴的资产阶级国家，他的电视作品中也有平民主义的倾向，反映社会中小人物的命运，最大程度的贴近生活。同时，个人英雄主义更是美剧中的一大特色，从早期的电影西部片，惩恶扬善；到之后的警匪片，悬疑片，一切都好像中国戏剧一样有特定的程式。就算是反面人物，也是为了声张正义而生。《越狱》的成功就说明了这一点，也反映了观众不同的审美期待。中国观众长期接受正统教育，遵纪守法，不违反法律和道德也是中国社会赖以稳定和谐的基础。而《越狱》挑战了国家和法律，这一点不同于国产电视剧，这种审美差异造成了新的期待。
二、不同的叙事题材来源于文化的差异

美国是一个强调自由、民主和博爱的社会，少受殖民统治，生性都热情奔放，电视剧内容丰富，少受政治的局限，面临激励的竞争，极度商业化，节目制作日趋精良，内容也非常的丰富。美国电视剧是美国社会的文化，政治和经济的重要表征，透过美国电视剧，我们可以直接地感受到美国社会的情感、想象、价值、身份乃至时代的现状和演变。
因此，在中国流行历史奇幻色彩的清宫戏、武侠片，反映现实社会生活题材的都市言情剧，家庭伦理剧，以及不断反映人们对现实不满等的反腐倡廉题材电视剧等，这些都和中国社会的文化、历史和现实背景紧密相关。而美国的西部片、医生律师剧、惊险动作剧等，代表的是美国社会主流价值观众的拓荒精神、冒险精神和专业精神。
三、叙事手法与结构的差异
中国电视剧遵循“开端-发展-高潮-结局”经典式叙事结构，并且结局大多为封闭式大团圆结局；美国电视剧喜欢开放式，循环式的结局。每一集的情节没有明确的结束，人物性格也不会随着剧情而变化，而是固执地一成不变，但却成为推动每一集故事发展的动力。
