白星航運公司經理布魯斯伊斯梅為了讓泰坦尼克號創造橫跨大西洋的最快紀錄，不顧潛在的冰山威脅暗示船長史密斯提高船速。14日夜晚，海面出奇的平靜，泰坦尼克號仍然全速行駛。瞭望台發現正前方的冰山後立刻通知了駕駛艙和大副，可是慣性極大的輪船已來不及躲避, 船身右側被冰山割裂，六個艙室進水。號稱永不沉沒的泰坦尼克號將在兩小時內沉沒。而此時船上的救生艇只夠一半乘客使用，船上陷入一片恐慌。
不料，這時傑克卻被霍利以偷竊鑽石之名栽贓陷害，並被關在下層船艙。不明真相的羅絲隨眾人一起在甲板上等候救生艇，可她終究還是相信傑克是無辜的。羅絲不顧一切回到空無一人的船艙尋找傑克，並在緊要關頭找來救生斧救出他。兩人來到甲板，羅絲在傑克的勸說下上了救生艇。救生艇徐徐放下，羅絲神情恍惚，突然她放棄了也許是最後的逃生機會跳回泰坦尼克號，這對情侶緊緊地擁抱在一起。
「夢幻之船」泰坦尼克號開始緩緩下沉，一幕悲劇開始上演。漆黑的海洋和天空連成一片，無情的吞噬著絕望的乘客。傑克帶著羅絲跑到船尾，爬上欄桿（也就是他們愛情開始的地方）堅持到最後，直到泰坦尼克號沉沒。兩人全力掙扎出巨大的漩渦之後，傑克將羅絲推上一塊漂浮木板，自己卻浸泡在冰冷的海水中。
幾個小時之後，救援船返回救起了奄奄一息的羅絲，而此時早已凍僵的傑克卻被冰海無情的吞沒。羅絲信守對傑克許下的諾言，勇敢地活著。
八十四年後，羅絲又來到泰坦尼克號沉沒的地方，將「海洋之心」拋入海中，以告傑克在天之靈……
