I am the part of the Green Olympics
Ladies and gentlemen:
good morning!
Today, my speech is "I am the part of the Green Olympics".
"Green Olympics" is one of the Three Themes of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Therefore the Beijing government had made a great effort in order to protect the environment, build more "Green project", keep the ecological balance, push the recycling economy, and protect the water resource. But if only the government take the action to realize the Green Olympics in 2008, its not enough. As a Beijing high school student, we should play an active role in the actions aimed at the realization of Green Olympics. So we should start it from ourselves, our family, our friends and other people around us.
In 2001, in the Moscow world trade center, when the former chairman of the International Olympic Committee, Samaranch had said: "Beijing, China!" As a Beijing citizen, as a Chinese, I had a great joy for my city, for my home country from the bottom of my heart! But after the excitement that Beijing had been succeed in the race to host the Olympic Game in 2008. I started to worry about the sty air, the sandstorm, the polluted rivers and lakes; the streets without any green and whether we could successfully host the Olympic Games in 2008.
Four years later, today, we can see 229 day blue sky in one year, we can hardly catch a glimpse of the sandstorm, groups of wild ck comes back to Shishahai Lake in the spring, and all the streets are dressed in green. All these make me deeply believe that Beijing will surely succeed in 2008! And all these achievements are not only the result that made by the Beijing government, but also by the 14 millions Beijing citizens. As one of the 14 millions normal citizens, I am also adding my contribution to our Green Olympic!
I used to have a habit, which is to take two longtime showers every day. It was a big waste of water. One day, I saw a piece of news in Beijing Daily that about the lack of the Beijing water resource. Its said every year Beijing use up about 3.7 billions cubic meter of water. But Miyun reservoir only contains 0.77 billions cubic meter of water, and Guanting reservoir only contains 0.19 billion cubic meter of water. This shows we are really short of water now! After reading this news, I start to change my habit, and only take one quick shower each day. I have calculated that if everyone economizes one cubic meter of water ring they are taking the shower in a month; the Beijing citizens will economize 14 million cubic meter of water in only one month! In 2004, as the Beijing Irrigation Apartment reported that since 2001 Beijing has succeeded in the application of hosting the Olympic game in 2008. Beijing government had started 26 programs in order to economize the water resource. After 3 years doing this, these programs have saved 0.437 billions cubic meter of water. Its as big as a four-sized Huairou reservoir! And now, in my daily life, in my family, we always think about protecting the environment and saving the resource whenever we doing what. The batteries, the aged newspapers, the empty glass bottles and all the recyclable garbage, we will classify them then put them in different trash cans; we make the most use of the nature light and shut off the electrical light conveniently; and when we shopping, we will bring a nylon bag with us instead of plastic bags; ring the feast, I do not send any card in order to protect the forest resource; after washing the clothes, we wont mp the used water but use it to flash the toilet… All in all, we should start from every little thing around us to truly realize the "Green Olympic".
I still remember clearly that in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, when Liu Xiang stood up on the award platform, he was wearing a coronet, which made by olive branch. Does this green olive branch stand for the "Green Olympic"? Olive branch is the symbol of peace, and the Olympic Game is the carrier of the "peace". We should not just simply think, "No war is the meaning of peace". "Nature and human beings living in harmony" is also the root meaning of "peace". "Save the resource, protect the environment", this kind action of pursuing "Nature and human beings living in harmony", is the way that shows the core of the Olympian spirit. So we say, peace is the spirit of Olympic, Olympic is the carrier of peace, and "Green Olympic" means that we are standing in a higher platform to seek the peace.
So the "Green Olympic" should be started from every little things in our daily life, start form me, from the people that around me. Express the spirit of Olympic, publicize the theme of "Green Olympic", and let Beijing really reaches the "Green Olympic" in 2008. This is the responsibility of anyone who loves peace. And it is also the responsibility of our Beijing high school students!

綠色奧運我參與
尊敬的各位評委們、女士們、先生們:
大家好!今天我演講的題目是"綠色奧運我參與"。
綠色奧運是北京2008年奧運會的三大理念之一。為此北京市政府無論是在環境的治理、綠化的建設、生態的保護、循環經濟和水資源的保護與利用,都做了大量的工作。但實現"綠色奧運"僅僅靠政府行為是遠遠不夠的,作為北京的中學生更應該積極的投身到"綠色奧運"的建設與宣傳當中去。從我做起,從我的家庭做起,從我身邊的朋友、同學做起。
2001年,當前國際奧委會主席薩馬蘭奇在莫斯科高聲宣讀:"Beijing, China"的時候,作為一個北京人,一個中國人,我發自心底的為我們的祖國,我們的首都感到高興。但在高興之餘,那灰濛蒙的天空,那漫天的沙塵暴,那污綠的護城河,那見不到一絲綠色的街道,又使我深為北京能否在2008年成功辦好奧運而感到擔心。
四年之後的今天,一年之中有了229天湛藍的天空,那滾滾的黃塵也早已不見,那一群群久違的野鴨也在春天飛回了北京的什剎海,街道也被綠色裝點的生機勃勃。這一切不知不覺的變化都在回答著我,北京一定能辦好2008年的奧運!而所有這些變化不僅僅是北京市政府的努力,更是在政府領導下的無數北京市民們努力的結果。作為這一千多萬普通北京市民的一員,我也在為我們的綠色奧運貢獻出自己的一份力量。
以前我曾有個習慣,每天早晚沖澡兩次,而且沖洗時間特別長,很浪費水。一天,我在北京日報上看到了一則關於北京水資源短缺的文章,說北京市每年用水量大概是37億立方米,而密雲水庫的蓄水量僅有7.7億立方米,官廳水庫的蓄水量僅有1.9億立方米,水資源的供需矛盾十分尖銳。看到這則報道後,我開始改變我的習慣,每天只洗一次澡,盡量在很短的時間內洗完。我算了一筆帳,每人每月洗澡節約一噸水,北京市1400萬人口將節約1400萬噸水。據北京市水利局2003年統計數字表明,從2001年申辦奧運成功後,開始實施市政府制定的26項節水措施,3年來節水達到4.37億立方米,相當於4個懷柔水庫。現在,在我的生活中,在我的家庭里,環保、節約的思想和行為時常都有體現。電池、報紙、玻璃瓶、油壺等可回收物,我們是分別處理、存放;購物、買菜的口袋使用尼龍口袋,基本不使用塑料袋;洗衣的水重復使用於沖洗馬桶……而實現綠色奧運也正是應該從身邊的這些小事做起。 愛愛英語學習網站
我們清楚的記得在2004年的雅典奧運會上,當劉翔登上領獎台時,他頭上戴了一個由橄欖枝編成的頭環。這綠色的橄欖枝不正是代表著"綠色奧運"嗎?橄欖枝象徵著和平,而奧運正是傳遞"和平"的載體,我們不能簡單的理解"沒有戰爭就是和平"。"人與自然和諧相處"也是"和平"最本質的含義。"節約資源、保護環境"這種追求"人與自然和諧相處"的具體行為正是奧林匹克精神的具體體現。所以我們說:和平是奧運的靈魂,奧運是和平的載體,綠色奧運是我們從更高的境界在追求和平。當偉大的精神被"平凡"廣泛的具體化以後,這種精神就被弘揚和光大了。
看來"綠色奧運"應該從點滴做起,從我做起,從我周邊的人做起。弘揚奧林匹克精神,宣傳綠色奧運理念,讓2008北京奧運真正做到"綠色奧運"。這正是每一個愛好和平、追求和平人們的義不容辭的責任。也是我們北京中學生的一種思想境界和追求。

Learning abilities differ from man to man. If this can be true then why can't there remain variation in the system of imparting ecation itself? Isn't it also obvious?
In the ancient times the process of ecating people depended on a school where the single teacher/master gave lessons to the pupils on different subjects. Then graally with the progress of the civilizations schools began to form with proper administrative systems where subjects were categorized and teachers were recruited accordingly. In this system of ecation a specific pattern of teaching began to be conventionalized. The process of evaluation after successful completion of the course was done through an examination system. For ages this has remained the dominant way of spreading ecation where the construct of the school or the institute is very specific. But with time things change as well as the concepts.
The latest trend in the ecation system is online ecation where the students can enjoy utmost freedom in the process of learning. You can remain engaged in all other works including the course you want to pursue. This is the major difference between the online ecation and conventional ecation systems.
It would be better to state that the whole conception of online ecation holds a difference in the core that separates it from conventional ecation. You won't have concrete classrooms in online ecation where you can find a bunch of students attending lectures of their respective teachers. But you will get online classrooms where there may be one-to-one communication between the instructor and the student. There can be also a group of students interacting at the same time but it is a virtual setup.
Both the systems of ecation do have some better things to give and also some unwanted things in store. As online ecation bothers about your personal convenience and comfort but it cannot provide you the lively feeling of a campus. You will miss the hues and cries of campus life and lack the socializing part among the friends circle that is an integral part of traditional system of ecation.
In the similar way you cannot exercise your own choices in the way you want to undertake learning process in the conventional schooling structure. But online ecation gives you every privilege to follow so. As for the degrees you get through conventional and online ecation systems, it is still the conventional mode that is widely recognized. But days are not far when online degrees will take the lead.
Soy food good for women
Women who ate soy regularly as children have a lower risk of breast cancer, American researchers report. And men who eat fish several times a week have a lower risk of colon cancer, a second team of researchers have told the American Association for Cancer Research.
The studies add to a growing body of evidence about the role of diet in cancer. Cancer experts now believe that up to two-thirds of all cancers come from lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and lack of exercise.
The US National Cancer Institute and researchers at the University of Hawaii found that women who ate the most soy-based foods, such as tofu and miso, when aged 5 to 11, reced their risk of developing breast cancer by 58 per cent. It was not clear how soy might prevent cancer, though compounds in soy called isoflavones have estrogen-like effects.
A second study showed that men who ate fish at least five times a week had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with men who ate fish less than once a week.
Many kinds of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which interfere with the cyclooxygenase-2 or COX-2 enzyme. COX-2 affects inflammation, which may play a role in tumour growth.

If you're middle-aged and your memory's not what it used to be, check the bathroom scale, researchers warned, suggesting overweight people tend to score more poorly on tests of memory than their thinner peers do.
The findings suggest that a heavier weight in middle age may mean a higher risk of dementia later in life.
Reporting in the journal Neurology, the researchers speculated that higher rates of cardiovascular disease or diabetes might help explain the link. But it's also possible that substances proced by fat cells, such as the hormone leptin, have direct effects on the brain.
The study compared mental abilities to body mass index (BMI), a measurement of weight in relation to height used to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of 25 or more indicates overweight, and 30 or more is obese.
The study also investigated the relationships between BMI and cognitive function in 2,223 healthy men and women between the ages of 32 and 62 in France through the use of four cognitive tests.
The study found a higher BMI was associated with lower cognitive test scores. Results from a test involving word memory recall show people with a BMI of 20 remembered an average of nine out of 16 words, while people with a BMI of 30 remembered an average of seven out of 16 words.

People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to a large British study released Monday.
Although the reasons are unclear, researchers said lack of sleep appeared to be linked to increased blood pressure, which is known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.
A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed those who cut their sleep from seven hours a night to five or less faced a 1.7-fold increased risk of death from all causes and more than double the risk of cardiovascular death.
The findings highlight a danger in busy modern lifestyles, Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Warwick's medical school, told the annual conference of the British Sleep Society in Cambridge.
"A third of the population of the UK and over 40 percent in the US regularly sleep less than five hours a night, so it is not a trivial problem," he told reporters.
Previous research has highlighted the potential health risks of shift work and disrupted sleep. But the study by Cappuccio and colleagues, which was supported by British government and US funding, is the first to link ration of sleep and mortality rates.
The study looked at sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 at two points in their lives - 1985-88 and 1992-93 - and then tracked their mortality rates until 2004.
The results were adjusted to take account of other possible risk factors such as initial age, sex, smoking and alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol.
Cappuccio said it was possible that longer sleeping could be related to other health problems such as depression or cancer-related fatigue.
"In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is optimal for health," he said.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

This movie is delightful from start to finish. Although some of the coincidences and chance meetings are highly improbable (both going to NYC? Both watching the same TV set at the same time?), they cannot spoil what is a genuinely touching and moving experience.
Instead of a the usual scenario where two people try desperately to find love, the two leads, Li Chiao (Maggie Cheung) and Li Xiao Jun (Leon Lai), try desperately to avoid it. Both Mainlanders, she has come to Hong Kong to make her fortune; he has come to earn enough money to marry his long-time fiancée back on the Mainland. Through a brief meeting in a McDonalds where Li Chiao works one of her several part-time jobs, and Xiao Jun has come to experience the unknown-in-his-hometown food, they become friends. They discover a shared love for the songs of Taiwanese singer Teresa Tang, which become the soundtrack to their relationship. Both are lonely, and graally they form a genuine friendship, then a not-so-casual intimate relationship. Their struggle to remain true to their original goal in coming to Hong Kong leads to an emotional crisis for both them and their partners. The struggle takes place over a ten year period, ring which they separate only to keep bumping into one another and reopening old wounds. The resolution of this struggle is sweet indeed.
The lead actors are both exceptional, particularly Leon Lai, who always seemed to be playing a variation on himself until this film. He is completely believable as the naive and trusting Xiao Jun, and Maggie Cheung is, as ever, radiant and affecting. The songs of Teresa Tang are used to great effect, one of which gives the film it's title (Tian mi mi, the title of the Chinese version, roughly translates as Sweet Like Honey).
