時間已經是1979年。邁克爾已經年過七十。政府不斷地追查他的罪狀，使他萌生了棄惡從善的念頭。他向家族提出停開賭場，集中一筆財富做正當生意。
邁克爾的兒子托尼在大學攻讀法律，但他卻不願當律師，而酷愛歌劇藝術。邁克爾決定讓大哥遜尼的私生子文森特繼承家業，當第三代教父。文森特是個很有心計的人。他對邁克爾言聽計從，因而很得他的歡心。但他也是個好色之徒。 他一面和女記者幽會，另一面又追求教父的愛女瑪麗。但邁克爾不允許文森和他女兒結合，因為黑手黨的教規禁止自己人通婚。為此瑪麗和父親之間產生了矛盾。雙方疏遠了。
為了贖回靈魂，邁克爾晚年想把違法掙來的資產轉向歐洲，使其合法化。他通過在梵蒂岡教廷的關系網來實施這一計劃。當梵蒂岡銀行出現巨額虧空時，邁克爾認為機會來到了。
當邁克爾同意注資梵蒂岡銀行，並要求獲得梵蒂岡銀行控制的歐洲地產集團屹立的控制權。屹立的控制人魯加西和大主教欺騙了邁克爾，拿錢並不讓出屹立，並企圖利用暗殺邁克爾。
為了清除最後幾個仇敵，邁克爾派了手下到紐約和西西里各地追查。然而，當他和歸來的妻子凱一起觀看兒子托尼表演的歌劇時，一場血腥的殘殺就發生在他身邊。新教皇被刺殺。一群槍手湧入了歌劇院。在槍聲大作中，邁克爾死裡逃生，但他的愛女卻為被誤傷而死。權力使邁克爾登上了輝煌的巔峰，但權力也使邁克爾沉入了罪惡的深淵。他終於走上了窮途末路，在悔恨和絕望中漸漸地離開了這個繁華喧囂的世界。

教父全三部全英文劇本 （含刪除情節）
呵呵，應吧主要求，不知道有沒有人發過。
中英文對比的劇本好像沒有，目前的版本連對白翻譯都不是很令人滿意，更別說劇本了。
英文劇本里被有些刪除的情節，比如麥克和凱在得知教父遇刺前在賓館親熱的情節，呵呵。
看劇本的好處，就是可以理解導演他們的真實想表達的東西，還有就是可以對比影片體會這些演員表現力的精湛。
