「每天起床，我看見的世界上的每個人，都好像都披著一層膜，無法穿透。這種感覺很奇怪，有點悲哀，可是沒有辦法改變。」
奇怪的是，貧窮和負面的童年經驗，並沒有讓她變壞或者失去希望，隱隱約約之中，她一直都知道，在她生長的環境之外，其它人所過的，是很不一樣的生活。而她知道，只有想辦法脫離現在的環境，才有可能到那個新世界去。母親死後的幾個月，在沒有經濟來源、沒有精神鼓勵的情況下，她自己一個人，申請進入一所私立高中，因為她相信，讀公立高中並不能幫她跳出貧苦的輪回。開始念書之後，她還是沒有地方睡，還要在骯臟的洗碗槽前面，一面工作賺微薄的薪水，一面念微積分、幾何學。
她身邊的所有親人、朋友全都告訴她，沒有用的，不要痴心妄想進大學。可是當她拿到班上第一名，得到機會參觀哈佛校園的那天，她就狠狠地發誓，要成為哈佛的一員。那天，當她看著走在哈佛校園里的男男女女，心裡不禁問自己，「這些人的動作舉止，為什麼這么不一樣？是不是因為，他們來的世界就是這么不一樣？若是這樣，那我要更努力、更努力，把我自己推到那個世界去。」
為了念哈佛，她必須要申請獎學金，找遍了所有的獎學金信息，她發現紐約時報提供全額的獎學金，足夠讓她去念昂貴的哈佛。面試的那天，她連一件象樣的衣服都沒有，穿著一件破爛衣服，罩上一件向姊姊借來的大衣勉強充場面。果然，她得到了那筆獎金，進了哈佛。領獎致詞的那天，她說，她的生命就在那一刻，將永遠地被改變。Liz Murray，一個最貧窮，也最勇敢的哈佛女孩。
