The Merchant of Venice (II)
原文:
The Merchant of Venice(II)
PART 1
D: Have mercy on Antonio, Shylock. Do not be so bitter.
S: I've promised to take my pound of flesh. If you do not let me have it, that will be a sign of weakness and no one will trust your laws any more. The greatness of Venice will soon be lost. Antonio is my enemy, and I hate him.
B: Do all men kill the things they do not love?

A: It is useless trying to argue with Shylock. Don't wait any longer. Pass judgement on me and give Shylock what he wants.
B: I'll pay you six thousand cats for the three thousand cats that Antonio borrowed.
S: If you offered me six times what you have just offered, I would still take my pound of flesh. Give me my pound of flesh!
D: Let us be calm, gentlemen. Shylock, how can you hope for mercy yourself when you show none?
S: I have done nothing wrong and I fear no judgement. I desire my pound of flesh.
As the Duke is wondering what to do, Nerissa, dressed like a lawyer's clerk, arrives with a letter from the famous lawyer whom Portia has visited. While the Duke is talking to Nerissa, Shylock gets ready to cut his pound of flesh from Antonio.
Then the letter is read out for all in the court to hear. "I am very ill. When your letter reached me, I had with me a .learned young doctor from Rome. I told him about the quarrel between Shylock and Antonio. We studied many lawbooks and he knows what I would say. I ask you to let him stand in my place and give judgement. He is young, but I never knew so young a body with so wise a head."
After the letter has been read out to the court, Portia, in lawyer's clothes, enters the room and takes her seat as judge.
PART 2
D: Greetings, learned judge! I do not envy you your job. This is a most troublesome case.
P: Greetings! Please be seated. Are you Antonio, and is this your agreement with Shylock?
A: It is.
P: Then Shylock must be merciful. He must have mercy on Antonio.
S: Why must I have mercy on him? Tell me that!
P: Mercy brings good. Mercy falls like the gentle rain from the sky upon the earth. It blesses those who give it, and those who receive it. We should learn to show mercy to others. Do you still ask for this pound of flesh? S: I ask for what is mine by law!
B: I offer ten times the money that Antonio has borrowed. Please change the law a little so that we may save Antonio.
P: Use your head a little, sir! We cannot change a law. If one law is changed, then people will later want to change other laws.
S: Oh, wise young judge!
P: Let me see this agreement, this promise of Antonio to you.
S: Here it is.
P: I see. According to the law, Shylock may have a pound of flesh to be cut off by him nearest to Antonio's heart. Be merciful! Let me destroy this paper.--No? Then, Antonio, be ready. And Shylock, take your knife and prepare to do the deed.
S: Oh, learned judge! Oh, wise young man!
P: Have you brought anything to weigh the flesh?
S: Yes. I have everything ready here.
P: Do you have a doctor, Shylock, to stop Antonio's blood?
B: That fox!
P: Do you wish to say anything, Antonio?
A: Only a little. Goodbye Bassanio. Don't be sad for me. Tell your wife about me and how much I loved you. If Shylock cuts deep enough, I'll pay him back with all my heart.
B: Let me take you in my arms and say goodbye. I love you more than my own life, more than my wife, and more than all the world. (He cries.)
P: Your wife would not be pleased to hear you say that.
S: We are wasting time.
P: Take your pound of flesh! I declare the court allows it and the law gives it to you.
Shylock advances towards Antonio and prepares to use his knife.
P: Wait! There is something else. Antonio has promised to give you a pound of his flesh. But he has not promised to give you any of his blood. If you let one drop of his blood fall, you will lose all your land and all your money.
S: Is that the law?
P: That is the law. You wanted justice, so you shall get justice, more than you wanted. : I will take the money. Give me three more than Antonio borrowed from me.
B: Here it is. (He cries out, full of joy.)
P: Wait! Shylock would not take the money earlier. All he wanted was right to be done. That is all he can have now. you must cut off one pound of flesh, no more, no less. And not one drop of blood must fall.
Shylock turns and starts to leave the court.
P: Wait, Shylock. The law of Venice says that if anyone tries to kill or murder any citizen of Venice, everything that he owns shall be taken away from him. One half of his money and his goods shall be given to the city of Venice and the other half shall be given to the person he has tried to kill. His life shall be at the mercy of the Duke. therefore, go down on your knees and beg the Duke for mercy.
S: Good sir. I beg for mercy and beg your pardon..
D: I shall not have you killed. But as your punishment, half of your money is now Antonio's. You must give the other half to the city of Venice.
S: Take my life too! My money and goods are as dear to me as life itself. They are my only comfort. When you take those away from me, you also take my life.
A: I shall be happy to give up my part of Shylock's money. Shylock must promise to leave the money upon his death to his daughter and her husband.
S: I promise. Let me go home now. I am not well.

A long time ago and far away there lived a King and a Queen .They were very happy, for their first child, a girl, had been born. " We must have a grand christening for her," said the King , who was delighted to have a daughter. "We must invite all the fairies of the kingdom to bless her," said the Queen. "How many are there now ?" asked the King. "Twelve or thirteen," said his wife. "Send the invitations . We'll soon find out ." There were twelve fairies, and they were all sent invitations. A thirteen fairy had not been heard of for so long that it was presumed that she was dead. No invitation was sent. The day of the christening was sunny and bright. The Princes was named Briar Rose, and the fairies began to give their gifts. "She shall be beautiful, "said the first. "She shall be wise ,"said the second. "She shall be good,"said the third. "She shall be kind ," said the fourth. The gifts continued in this way, wishing all that was good for Briar Rose. Eleven of the twelve fairies had given their gifts when the room suddenly went dark. After a great flash of light a small dark figure stood in front of the King and Queen. It was the thirteenth fairy. "why wasn't I invited to the christening?" she screamed. She was furious at being left out. "All the fairies of the kingdom have given their blessings. Well, here's mine for the Princess. On her sixteenth birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die." Another flash of light and the fairy was gone. "But we thought she was dead," said the King. "What can we do ?" The Queen was in tears. The twelfth fairy stepped forward. There is still my gift for Briar Rose," she said. "The fairy's curse cannot be undone, but I can change it a little. She will fall into a deep sleep that will last one hundred years," There was a great hubbub in the hall as everyone discussed the events. The following day the King issued a proclamation, ordering that all spinning wheels and spindles were to be destroyed. Throughout the land there were great fires as the spinning wheels were burned. Over the years, the Princess grew into a lovely girl. All who met her were enchanted by her. Eventually, the bad fairy's wish was forgotten. All spinning wheels and spindles had been destroyed ,so there was no reminder. And the fairy was not heard of again. And so, on Briar Rose's sixteenth birthday, the King and Queen were e to arrive back from a far away visit. There was to be a large birthday party for the Princess. Briar Rose was wandering around the palace. Everyone was preparing for the party, so she could please herself where she went. As had never set foot in, she foot in, she decided to go exploring. "I wonder what is in the great South Tower," she said. All the servants and courtiers wished her a happy birthday as she made her way across the palace. That part of the palace was very old, and there were very few people there. The base of the tower was in a corridor. The entrance was a small, very solid looking door. The key was on the outside. "It's very stiff ,"said the Princess, as she turned the key. "There! It's open!" Stairs led up the tower in front of her .She began to climb them. Meanwhile, her parents had arrived back at the palace. "Has anyone seen the Princess?" asked the King. "Today is her sixteenth birthday-the day when the curse may fall. Somebody must know where she is." Nearly everyone had seen her, but nobody knew where she had been going. "She must be found," said the Queen. "If the prophecy is to come true, today is the day." A search of the palace and the grounds began. Meanwhile, the Princess had reached the top of the tower where there was another door . This time there was no key and the door was slightly open. "There must be a wonderful view of the rest of the palace and grounds from the window, "said the Princess . Then she heard a strange whirring sound. It was unlike anything that she had ever heard before. She pushed the door open and went into the room. There, in the middle, sat an old woman working at a spinning wheel. Behind her was an enormous bed. The wheel was making the noise. "What are you doing?" asked Briar Rose. "I have never seen one of those before, what is it?" "It is a spinning wheel, "said the old women, "Would you like to try it my dear?" "Oh. may I?" asked Briar Rose. She sat on the stool in front of the wheel and the wheel whirred round. As soon as she touched the spindle she pricked her finger. She fell to the floor in a deep sleep. The old woman, who was really the thirteenth fairy in disguise, picked her up and laid her on the bed. At that moment, all over the place, people began to asleep. The cooks who were preparing for the party fell asleep over the stirring and tasting. The scullery maids fell asleep over the washing up. The laundry maid fell asleep while they sted, polished and prepared for the party. The King and Queen, the courtiers and the guests fell asleep in the Great Hall. The guards fell asleep at their posts. The search parties looking for the Princess fell asleep while they searched- in the gardens, in the corridors, in the spare rooms, and some in the oldest part of the palace. Even the flies fell asleep on the stable walls. The birds and the butterflies fell asleep in the palace the palace vegetable gardens. The gardeners and their helpers, who were busy chasing off the rabbit, fell asleep in mid-chase. In the hearths the fires died down and the meat stopped cooking. The kitchen maid stopped plucking the chicken. The entire palace fell asleep, along with the Princess. A hedge of briar roses sprang up around the palace, protecting it from the outside world. Years passed, and from time to time a King's son would come to the famous briar hedge to try and find the mysterious sleeping Princess that the legend spoke of. But none got through. The hedge was too strong and the Princes were cut to bits. A hundred years passed and the tale of the Sleeping Beauty, as the Princess was known, become a great legend. Very few people believed she existed. One day a King's son came to the nearby village. "Legend says," an old man was speaking in the village square. "Legend says that the Princess lies asleep behind that great briar hedge just outside the village In my grandfather's day, you could see the topmost turret of her tower, so they say." The Prince stopped to listen. "Where can I find this hedge ?"he asked. "Just beyond the village, young sir, "said the old man. "If you're going to try, you'll need more luck than the other young men who have had a go." "I shall try," said the Prince. "We have heard of Sleeping Beauty in my kingdom." The Prince went to the hedge and held up his sword. He went to strike at the hedge, but where his sword met the thorns, great roses bloomed instead. A path opened for him, for the one hundred years were up. The curse was lifting. The hedge seemed to disappear before him. He went through into the palace grounds, walking past the sleeping rabbits, birds and butterflies, and the gardeners at their work. The kitchens were full of cooks and maids who hadn't moved for a hundred years -- They were all fast asleep. Even the King and Queen who were seated at the table in the Great Hall were sleeping soundly! The Prince walked on through the palace, making his way to the tallest tower where he climbed the stairs and entered the tower room. There on the bed he saw Briar Rose fast asleep. "She is so lovely," he said, He had fallen completely in love with her. "How can I wake her?" He leant over and gently kissed her. Briar Rose's eyelids flickered and she woke up. The first person she saw was the Prince and she fell in love with him. Together they walked down to the Great Hall. The King and Queen were just waking up, when the Prince and Briar Rose entered. The cooks in the kitchen woke up to carry on preparing the food and the chambermaids carried on with their work. The party was still to be held, but it was an engagement party instead of a birthday party. The Prince and Briar Rose were to be married. The hedge disappeared and the village saw the palace again and realised the legend had been true. The bad fairy was never heard of again.
Long ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful young girl. She was very sad. Her mother had died and her father had married again. His new wife had two ugly daughters, Esmerelda and Griselda. Soon after, her father also died and life immediately changed for the girl. "You will be our servant, "said her stepmother. "You will do everything we say." "You must sleep in the kitchens, by the fire," said the stepsisters. After tending the fire, and cooking and leaning, the girl's clothes were very dirty. She was called to clear away dishes. "There are cinders all over your clothes!" exclaimed the stepmother. "Cinders for Cinderella. That's your new name. Clear these things away, Cinderella." "Cinderella! Cinderella!" sang Esmerelda and Griselda. "Oh, how clever you are, Mama!" Cinderella had to work very hard, as all the other servants were dismissed. One day, an invitation arrived from the palace. "Girls, listen to this," said the stepmother. Cinderella was serving the breakfast. She listened as her stepmother read the invitation. "The King is having a ball," she said, excitedly. "He is looking for a wife for the Prince! Oh, my dears, this is wonderful. He will probably choose one of you, but it will be such a hard choice to make. "Am I invited too, stepmother?" asked Cinderella. "You! Certainly not!" exclaimed her stepmother. "The thought of such a thing. A scruffy servant going to a ball, when only beautiful ladies are invited!" "Hah! Hah!" laughed the stepsisters. "Beautiful! That doesn't include you, Cinderella!" "You may help my two lovely girls to get ready," said her stepmother. "Oh," said Cinderella, sadly. "We shall all have new dresses, girls, and we shall go shopping today. Clear away these things, Cinderella." 'Oh, I wish I could go to the ball,' thought Cinderella. The day of the ball arrived and the whole day was spent preparing Esmerelda and Griselda. Cinderella did her best to make the sisters look pretty, but it was an impossible task. Finally, the coach arrived to collect the girls and their mother. Cinderella was very tired and she wandered back to the kitchens. "Oh, I did so want to go," she sighed as she sat down by the fire. "What's to stop you?" asked a voice. "Who's that?" asked Cinderella, looking around. "I'm here by the door." A strange woman walked up to Cinderella. "I heard you the other day, wishing you could go to the ball. Well, the ball is this evening, and you're going." "But how?" asked Cinderella. "What can you do?" "Anything I want to," said the woman. "I'm your fairy godmother, and I'm here to send you to the ball. She sat down. "Come now," she said. "Dry those tears. We have work to do. I need a large pumpkin, two rats, two mice and a frog. Can you find these?" "Yes," said Cinderella, mystified by the request. "Off you go, then." When Cinderella found all the things, her fairy godmother took them all outside. "Now for the magic," she said. She waved her hands and the air began to twinkle and sparkle. The pumpkin began to grow and change, until standing there was a glittering coach. The mice changed into two fine footmen, the frog into the driver, and the rats into two beautiful horses to pull the coach. Cinderella clapped her hands. "It's beautiful!" she cried. "In you get," said her fairy godmother. "But I can't go like this," said Cinderella. "Like what?" asked the fairy godmother. "You look lovely to me." Cinderella looked at herself. While the magic had been working on the pumpkin, it had also been working on her. Instead of her ragged dress she wore a beautiful ball gown, with glass slippers on her feet. "Oh, fairy godmother," said Cinderella. "It's lovely. How can I thank you?" "By going to the ball," said the fairy godmother. "Off you go, but remember, the magic stops working at midnight. Everything will change back then. Now go and enjoy yourself." "Good-bye, fairy godmother," called Cinderella, as the coach swept off. Cinderella arrived at the palace and walked into the ballroom. Everyone stopped and stared. "Who is she?" people asked, including her stepmother and stepsisters. The Prince saw her, and had eyes for no one else for the rest of the evening. Cinderella danced only with the Prince, and as the evening passed, he fell in love with her. A clock chiming reminded Cinderella of her fairy godmother's warning. 'It must be eleven o'clock,' she thought, but she asked the Prince. "What time is it?" "Almost midnight," he answered. "Oh, no!" cried Cinderella. "I must go!" "You can't. Not now," said the Prince. "I must." And Cinderella swept out of the room, and ran out of the palace. As she ran, the clock finished chiming. Cinderella's clothes changed back into rags, and the coach and horses were nowhere to be seen. The Prince tried to follow, but he couldn't catch up. When he reached the door, all he found was one glass slipper. He ran to the main gate. "Was a beautiful girl just driven out of here?" he asked the guard. "No, your Highness. I've only seen a scruffy servant girl," the guard answered. "I've lost her," said the Prince, and he returned sadly to the palace. The next morning, Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were talking about the ball. "Did you see the Prince, once that girl arrived." said Esmerelda. "He wouldn't look at anybody else. And it was my turn to dance with him." "Never mind, my dear," said her mother. "She disappeared, so there will probably be another ball, and then you will be chosen." The Prince meanwhile decided to look for the mysterious girl he had fallen in love with. He issued a proclamation. "Whoever the glass shoe fits, shall be wife to the Prince." The Prince and his footman went from house to house of all the ladies invited to the ball. First to the princesses, and then to the chesses, and finally to all the ladies. He finally arrived at the stepmother's house. "It's my shoe!" cried Esmerelda, trying desperately to pull the shoe on. "Please, miss!" said the footman. "Your foot is too big. you will break the slipper." Griselda tried the shoe, but her toes were far too long. "Is there anyone else?" asked the Prince. "There's only Cinderella, the maid," said the stepmother. "But she wasn't even at the ball." "All the ladies in the kingdom must try the slipper," said the footman. Cinderella was called from the kitchen. Esmerelda and Griselda laughed when they saw how dirty she was. But their laughter turned to tears when they saw Cinderella's foot slide easily into the slipper. "Oh!" they cried. "It fits!" The Prince looked at Cinderella and realised that she was the girl that he had fallen in love with. Cinderella took the other slipper from her pocket and put it on. The Prince was delighted to have found her, and on a bright sunny day, he and Cinderella were married. They lived happily ever after.------------------------------------------------------------------------- 從前,有一個富人的妻子得了重病,在臨終前,她把自己的獨生女兒叫到身邊說:「乖女兒,媽去了以後會在九泉之下守護你、保佑你的。」
