邁克爾·貝一開始因為對3D並不熟悉，對影片採用3D持謹慎態度，但為詹姆斯·卡梅隆開發3D攝影機的文斯·佩斯加盟影片，使得邁克爾·貝最終還是決定使用3D進行拍攝。

第三集的副標題「月黑之時」指的是一段時間內月亮有三天被遮住而消失，因而稱為「無月之日」，它象徵著一個時代的結束與一個新的開始。

前兩集的編劇羅伯托·奧奇和艾里克斯·庫茲曼也為影片進行了前期的劇本工作，但隨後就被棄用，曾經參與過《變形金剛2》編劇工作的伊倫·克魯格最終完成了影片的劇本。

劇情簡介：

山姆·維特維奇（希亞·拉博夫飾）成功阻止了「霸天虎」和「汽車人」兩派變形金剛的對決，拯救了全世界的兩年後，他雖然被視為英雄人物，但是他還是一個青少年，對於即將要上大學這件事充滿了焦慮，尤其是要離開他的女友米凱拉（梅根·福克斯飾）以及第一次離開他的父母。

他也必須向留下來守護他的變形金剛「大黃蜂」解釋，他不希望他跟他去大學，因為山姆只想要過一個平凡的大學生涯，但是他這么做，就必須拋開他的宿命。正當山姆想要盡可能把之前被捲入變形金剛大戰的事件撤底忘記的同時，那場大戰卻造成了很多改變。
