Joel [Schumacher] says that if you read what's written about you – which sometimes I do and sometimes I don't -- and you believe all the good things, then you should believe the bad things, too, - says the actress and former operatic ingénue. - Listen, I try to keep myself as sane and as grounded as possible by surrounding myself with normal people, such as all the friends that I've had from when I was little. Nobody in my family is in the business, I still do my laundry, make my bed and I bring my laundry across the street to the Laundromat. Joel had been casting for six months, which was the six months I'd been working on The Day After Tomorrow in Montreal, so I came in really at the very tail end of the casting process and in fact, I was the last person he ever saw. - Rossum, who made her operatic debut at New York's renowned Metropolitan Opera at age 7, admits to have never seen any of the stage proctions of Phantom prior to reading the screenplay. - So he sent me the script, and I kind of got a feel for a take on the character. Because there wasn't a lot of verbal dialogue in the script, while I was talking to him about what she goes through, I had to express the things that she feels as I was talking about what she was feeling, so it was kind of a strange audition process. 幕間曲過後，舞台上出現的是戴著面具的Firmin和Andre，時間已經是繼吊燈墜下後大概6個月了。已經是新的一年。期間，Phantom沒有再來打擾任何人，新的吊燈也安裝好了，於是人們在劇院里舉辦了一次化妝舞會(Masquerade)來慶祝這新的生活。已經秘密訂婚的Christine和Raoul也在人群中攜手共舞。雖然Raoul很希望公開這個秘密，但是Christine依然害怕Phantom會知道後威脅他們的生活，要求Raoul繼續保密，並把Raoul給的訂婚戒指串在項鏈上，而不是戴在手上。Raoul雖然不是心甘情願，但也無可奈何。 正在歡樂進行到高潮的時候，突然出現一個戴著紅色死神面具的客人，大家都被這奇異嚇人的裝束震住了。來者正是銷聲匿跡許久的Phantom。他帶來了剛剛寫就的一出歌劇《唐璜的勝利》（Don Juan Triumphant）要求劇院上演。並且，在再度消失前，他從Christine脖子上奪走那枚戒指，告訴她他還沒有放棄她。 舞會不歡而散，Raoul見Giry夫人心事重重，就上前詢問她是否知道Phantom的底細。Giry夫人在Raoul的苦苦勸說下，這才道出Phantom的來歷。原來幾十年前，巴黎來過一個江湖馬戲團，除了表演雜耍，他們還展出一些畸形人供大家娛樂，其中有一個被關在籠子里的怪臉人，卻是一個知識淵博的建築師，音樂家。後來，這個怪臉人逃出了籠子，大家遍尋不著，都以為他已經死在某個角落。而Giry夫人則清楚意識到，之後出現在歌劇院的Phantom，就是這個怪人。Raoul聽到這一切，心中飄過一絲寒意，還想繼續追問，但是Giry夫人已經不敢再說下去，他也只得作罷。 兩位經理對著新的總譜一籌莫展，說實話，他們不想聽從Phantom的命令，但是實在害怕再來一次意外。這時，他們又收到了Phantom發來的字條，上面對歌劇院的人事安排等做出了一系列的指示。接著，Carlotta和Piangi又闖了進來，大呼小叫，原來Phantom給Carlotta在戲中安排的是一個只有合唱的小配角角色。Carlotta無法接受，說這是對她的侮辱。Raoul帶著Christine前來詢問兩位經理到底有無決斷，是否讓Christine出演主角。而Giry夫人又帶著另一張字條匆匆趕來。Phantom在這張最後指示中聲明他的要求必須都得到滿足，否則，更大的災難將會等著他們。大家一時沒了主意 Raoul突然覺得這是一個很好的機會，便跟兩位經理商議一切按照Phantom的意思辦，但是另外他們將布置崗哨，誘捕Phantom。Giry夫人聽了十分驚慌，極力勸說他們，但是三人不聽，Christine雖然百般懇求他們不要讓她陷於其中，但是經不起Raoul的規勸，遂答應了他。當然，Phantom也沒有錯過他們的談話。 於是乎，一切都開始行動，Reyer先生開始給大家排練新的歌劇，在嘈雜的排練房裡，正當人們忙碌而且緊張到了極點的時候，突然放置一旁的鋼琴在沒有人彈奏得情況下自己彈出了排練曲目。驚惶失措的Christine奪路逃出，來到了父親的墓地前，向墓碑上的父親塑像訴說著自己的憂慮和恐慌，希望能得到他的幫助。突然，Phantom又出現在了她面前。Phantom告訴她自己就是他父親說的Angel of Music，就是來引導和保護她的。被過度驚嚇的Christine再次被Phantom迷惑住。這時Raoul也聞訊趕到了墓地，並力勸Christine不要相信Phantom的話。Phantom企圖挑逗Raoul上前跟他決斗，但是Raoul被Christine制止並一起逃離了墓地。Phantom憤怒之餘，發誓要報復他們兩個人。 地點回到劇院，Raoul和兩位經理正在緊急安排警察布哨布崗，准備在《唐璜的勝利》的首演式上，在5號包廂抓住Phantom。不過這一切都沒有逃過Phantom的耳目，Phantom的聲音在劇院各個角落響起，嘲笑他們的狂妄，並且挑戰他們說如果真想抓他，就盡快開演《唐璜的勝利》。Raoul也決定破釜沉舟，和Phantom做最後一次較量。 演出在合唱中開始了，按照劇情。Piangi扮演的Don Juan和其仆從為了設計引誘由Christine扮演的女主人公，進入舞台上的隔間換上仆從的服裝。但是Phantom早已設計好了在隔間內用旁遮普套索弔死了Piangi，然後換上了劇情中的斗篷，遮住自己的臉，出來和Christine一起演唱了劇中一段優美的詠嘆調The Point of No Return。演出中，Christine偶然觸碰到了Phantom的面部，發現對方並不是Piangi，就掀開了斗篷，一時間大家被舞台上的突變嚇住，而Raoul為了不傷害Christine，也阻止了士兵開槍。Phantom按捺不住內心的渴望，用柔和的嗓音，向Christine表明愛意，而Christine也勇敢地揭下了Phantom的面具，讓觀眾們都看到了Phantom的扭曲的相貌。在一片驚呼聲中，Phantom帶上Christine，再次消失在眾目睽睽之前，讓Raoul精心布置的陷阱落了空。同時，舞台上的人們也發現了早已死在布景後面的Piangi。 Raoul一時沒了主意，但是Giry夫人提醒他趕快跟著她去地下室，並囑咐他一定要記住將胳臂舉過頭頂，以防Phantom再次使用旁遮普套索襲擊他們。同時，幾乎所有的人都出動，一邊高喊抓住兇手，一邊到處查找Phantom的蹤影。 Phantom果然又帶著Christine來到地下室，他正沉浸在小小獲勝的喜悅中，突然又被遠遠傳來的人們的叫喊聲攪亂心情。他質問Christine，為什麼這個世界會對他這么不公平，僅僅因為他長了一副令人可怕，連他的母親都不忍正眼以對的面容。Christine告訴他，之所以覺得世界對他不公，不是世人的錯誤，而是因為他自己囚禁了自己的靈魂，並且與世人為敵，為了達到目的而不惜殺人或者奪取他人所愛。所以，她對他的感情，已經從同情轉為憎恨，而沒有絲毫的愛。 正在這時，Raoul已經趕到地下室，但是被阻隔在鐵欄之外。他哀求Phantom可以對他做任何事，但是一定放過Christine。Phantom被他的打攪激怒，趁他不防，用旁遮普套索套住了Raoul，並且逼迫Christine做出選擇： 1）要麼用Raoul的生命換取她的自由； 2）或者披上Phantom准備的婚紗，換取Raoul的生命。 盡管Raoul表示自己可以為愛犧牲生命而在所不惜，但是Christine不忍愛人的犧牲。她最終鼓起勇氣，告訴Phantom，她將告訴他，愛的力量，會有多麼強大，上帝終究會拯救Phantom的靈魂。然後，給了Phantom一個吻……
尾聲
一個意味深長的吻，如同天上的造物主的光輝，照亮了Phantom的封閉的心靈。Phantom被Christine的堅定的愛的力量徹底折服。他松開了Raoul脖子上的旁遮普吊索，對Christine和Raoul揮了揮手，讓他們趕快離開，並且不要再回來也不要跟旁人提起這里的一切。 Christine和Raoul相依走到門口，突然Christine回頭跑到Phantom身邊，將Phantom之前給她戴上的戒指摘下，還給Phantom。Phantom強捺悲哀，目送Christine離去。然後悲哀地唱出「It's over now, the music of the night--」，然後慢慢地走向舞台一角的王座。 正在此時，Meg帶著眾人也找到了地下室這里，在她們進到地下室之前，Phantom鑽入綢布內，他的寶座上，只留下Phantom的一隻面具。 多年以後，Christine去世，已是白發蒼蒼的Raoul帶著拍賣所得的八音盒來到Christine的墓前，正感傷時，突然猛地一怔：Christine的墓前不知何時擺放了一支紅玫瑰，上面用黑色的絲帶系著一枚戒指，正是當年Christine還給Phantom的那一枚，Raoul四處環視，卻一無所獲．．．．．．（劇終）
