Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) and her sister Jane Bennet (Rosamand Parker), sister Mary Bennet (Dalula Lely), Katie Bennet (Kerry Mulligan) and Lydia Bennet (Gina Malone) are all sisters from small landlord families. Mrs. Bennet's greatest goal in life is to find the right man for all five of her daughters. Unfortunately, the second daughter, Elizabeth, can always find out 100 reasons for refusing to marry her mother.

When Mrs. Bennet heard that the neighbouring manor was rented by a wealthy bachelor and would come to spend the summer with his distinguished friends, she excitedly decided that it was a blessing for her daughters. The suitor was on the verge of coming, and things were going as she had expected.

The monotonous and slightly quiet life of the five sisters was accompanied by the arrival of wealthy single Handacy (Matthew McFadden) and his friend Gray, two young men. A beautiful love story full of pride and Prejudice unfolded after the healthy and upward Gray and the wealthy Darcy met the five golden flowers of the Bennet family in the town.

Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) is the most diligent of the five sisters. She is also a talented college student. She never considered marriage before graation. But when she met the handsome, cynical Gray and the wise businessman Darcy (Matthew McFadden), her judgment began to be tested. Because the wealthy son Darcy soon fell deeply in love with the beautiful Elizabeth after a brief exchange.

Moreover, Darcy bravely proposed to her regardless of the family and wealth gap, but because of Elizabeth's misunderstanding and prejudice against him, he was relentlessly refused. The reason why Elizabeth misunderstood and prejudiced him was that Darcy, a wealthy man, often showed immortal arrogance, which made the honest and kind Elizabeth disgusted. Because Darcy's arrogance is actually a reflection of status differences, so long as there is such arrogance, there can be no common thoughts and feelings between him and Elizabeth, nor can there be an ideal marriage.

But after a period of time, graally, Elizabeth found and witnessed a qualitative change in Darcy's way of dealing with people and a series of actions. Especially his past proud and conceited manner disappeared completely, so Elizabeth's misunderstanding and prejudice towards him graally disappeared, and a happy marriage finally achieved. Her sisters also got the sweet life they wanted.

Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre. But my first impression of this story was from screen.
It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine, though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot. I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven't read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.

In fact, I didn't understand the story at that time. I didn't know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice. I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time. I like it so just like it, if not so just not. I'm a person thinking by heart not by brain. What is worse, I actually didn't think it's wrong. I thought everyone is all like that.Everyone has his special way to cognize the world. So it's indiviality, not prejudice. But I think something is wrong. Though everyone can judge in the way he likes, he can't ignore other ones. You can like what you like and hate what you hate, but you should be objective when you meet external world. I think it means that you should consider things roundly, not just partial. Indiviality is different from prejudice. What is it? I need to think more.

Elizabeth Bennett (Keira Knightley) is the second of five daughters, all single and young. When a new man moves into the neighborhood, all of the girls take notice. Mr. Bingley is quite rich and handsome enough, after all. At the first large party for area folks, Mr. Bingley comes to the festivity with his sister and the proud Mr. Darcy in toe. Bingley has his eye on Elizabeth's beautiful sister Jane while Mr. Darcy neither dances or talks to anyone. Although unacknowledged, however, Mr. Darcy is transfixed by Elizabeth and she is strangely drawn to him. Through a series of town meetings, country visits, and more, Elizabeth and Darcy meet again...and again. There is something stirring. Is is disgust or is it love?

This classic story could not be presented better than it is this film. It is utterly lovely in every aspect, every way. The performers are just outstanding, with Knightley giving Elizabeth the fire, the mind, the sensitivity that make her such an appealing person. Mr. McF is to sigh and cry over as his Darcy is handsome, in possession of a arresting voice, and provides a display of the great depth of his own sensitive nature. The costumes and scenery are colossally stunning, as is the editing, the script (most of it is Austen's own words), and anything else that makes a movie this beautiful. Do not let another day go by before you buy a ticket or arrange any other method to watch this film.

It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife. And when such a man moves into a neighbourhood, even if nothing is known about his feelings or opinions, this truth is so clear to the surrounding families, that they think of him immediately as the future husband of one or other of their daughters.
When Mr Bennet was young, Mr Bennet had made the mistake of falling in love with a pretty but foolish young woman.During the long years of their marriage, he had had time to regret his mistake. He soon realized that his wife had little intelligence or common sense, and was only interested in talking, shopping and finding husbands for her daughters. His experience had made him rather bitter, and he could not stop himself mocking his wife, who never understood her husband's sense of humour.
So when, a week later, Mrs Bennet discovered that her hus- band had in fact visited Mr Bingley at Netherfield, she was surprised and very pleased. But she and her daughters tried in vain to persuade Mr Bennet to describe the wealthy stranger, and in the end they had to rely on another neighbour's description.
『He sounds wonderful,Mama!』cried Lydia, the youngest and noisiest of the sisters.『Charlotte Lucas's father has been to see him, and says he's quite young, very handsome, and ex- tremely charming! And even better,he loves dancing!Every- body knows that means he's very likely to fall in love!』
As politeness required, Mr Bingley came to visit Mr Bennet a few days later. He was not, however, fortunate enough to see the Bennet girls, who were hiding behind the curtains in an up- stairs room in order to catch sight of the handsome stranger.Mrs Bennet planned to invite him to dinner, but in fact they met him at another social event first. The Bennets lived in the small Hertfordshire village of Longbourn, and public dances were regularly held in the nearest town, Meryton. The girls were greatly looking forward to this particular dance, because they had heard that Mr Bingley would be attending, with a group of friends from London.
On the night of the dance, all eyes were on Mr Bingley as he entered the room. He had brought his two sisters, with the husband of the elder, Mr Hurst, and another young man,Mr- Darcy.Mr Bingley was indeed good-looking and gentleman- like, and his sisters were fine, fashionable women. However, ev- erybody was soon talking about Mr Darcy, a tall, handsome man, who,it was said, had an income of ten thousand pounds a year. The ladies in the room gazed at him in admiration for about half the evening, until they became aware of his constant frown and his unwillingness to talk or dance. Then there was general agreement that he was proud and disagreeable, and considered himself superior to country people.Mr Bingley, on the other hand, made himself popular with the ladles by danc- ing every dance and talking to everybody.
While observing Mr Bingley's interest in Jane, however,Elizabeth had not noticed Mr Darcy's interest in herself.Al- though at first he had not even considered her pretty, he now began to realize what a beautiful expression her dark eyes gave to her intelligent face, and what an attractive figure she had.『Of course, she is only an unfashionable village girl,』he told himself, but her conversation is often quite amusing.』When- ever they met, he did not speak to her, but stood near her, lis- tening to her and watching her closely, conscious of a wish to know her better.
That evening Elizabeth appeared again in the sitting-room.She could not avoid noticing how frequently Mr Darcy's eyes were fixed on her, but as she felt sure that so great a man could not possibly admire her,she assumed that when he looked at her, he was criticizing her in some way. This thought did not cause her any pain, as she liked him too little to care for his ap- proval.
In the conversations she had with him, she spoke in her usual slightly mocking manner, rather expecting to offend him,but was surprised by the quiet politeness of his replies.Darcy had never before been so charmed by any woman. He really be- lieved that if she did not have such vulgar relations, he might be in danger of falling in love with her. Miss Bingley saw or suspected enough to be jealous, and her great anxiety for the recovery of her dear friend Jane was increased by her wish to get rid of Elizabeth.
Fortunately perhaps, for almost everyone at Netherfield,Elizabeth and her sister, who was now quite recovered, were returning home the next day. Only Mr Bingley showed real sorrow at this, and was concerned that Jane might not be fit enough to travel. Mr Darcy was quite relieved, and determined that no sign of admiration for Elizabeth should escape him now. Miss Bingley's politeness to Elizabeth, as well as her af- fection for Jane, increased rapidly as the moment of departure approached, and she was able to say goodbye to them with many warm expressions of friendliness and a promise to visit them very soon.
Mr Bennet was glad to welcome his eldest daughters home again,as he had felt their absence from the family circle, but Mrs Bennet, who had hoped they would stay much longer, was quite disappointed to see them come back in such a short time.

Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen began her second novel, Pride and Prejudice, before she was twenty-one. It was originally titled First Impression because the appearances of the characters created the plot of the novel. However, because the novel is also concerned with the effects of the character's first impressions, that is their prejudice, Jane found the title Pride and Prejudice more appropriate.

Pride and Prejudice, similar to other Jane Austen's novels, is written in gentle or Horacian satire. The main object of Jane's satire in the novel is the mercenary and the ignorance of the people, a common criticism of the 18th century. Characters in the novel which best carries these qualities are Mrs. Bennet, a foolish woman who talks too much and is obsess with getting her daughters married; Lydia Bennet, the youngest of the Bennet daughter who is devoted to a life of dancing, fashions, gossips and flirting; and Mr. Williams Collins, the silly and conceited baboon who is completely stupify by Lady Catherine in every aspect of his life that he has forgotten his own morals and ty. The tone of the novel is light, satirical, and vivid. Scenes such as Mr. Collins proposal to Elizabeth, and Lady Catherine visits to Lizzy at Longbourn, provides comic relief to the reader while at the same time revealing certain characteristics of the characters. For example, Lydia's lack of common sense and responsibility is revealed when she takes pride in being the first Bennet girl to be married. Lydia does not take into consideration the circumstance of her marriage, the personality of her husband, or the prospects of their marriage for the future. Elizabeth Bennet's ability to laugh off her misfortunate and to continue to be optimistic, considering her situation, also contributes to the tone of the novel. The point of view in Pride and Prejudice is limited omniscient; the story is told through Elizabeth, but not in first person. As a result, the mood of the novel lacks dramatic emotions. The atmosphere is intellectual and cold; there is little descriptions of the setting. The main actions of the novel are the interactions between opinions, ideas, and attitudes, which weaves and advances the plot of the novel. The emotions in the novel are to be perceived beneath the surface of the story and are not to be expressed to the readers directly. Jane's powers of subtle discrimination and shrewd perceptiveness is revealed in Pride and Prejudice; she is able to convey such a complex message using a simple, yet witty, style.

The main subject in the novel is stated in the first sentence of the novel: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." In this statement, Jane has cleverly done three things: she has declared that the main subject of the novel will be courtship and marriage, she has established the humorous tone of the novel by taking a simple subject to elaborate and to speak intelligently of, and she has prepared the reader for a chase in the novel of either a husband in search of a wife, or a women in pursuit of a husband. The first line also defines Jane's book as a piece of literature that connects itself to the 18th century period. Pride and Prejudice is 18th century because of the emphasis on man in his social environment rather than in his indivial conditions. The use of satire and wit, a common form of 18th century literature, also contributes to label the book as 18th century. However, because Jane Austen had allowed personal feelings of the characters to be expressed in her work, she can also be classified as Romantic. In the figure of Elizabeth, Jane Austen shows passion attempting to find a valid mode of existence in society. Passion and reasons also comes together in the novel to show that they are complementary of marriage.

There are seven different marriages presented in the novel. Excluding the Gardiner and the Lucas, the remaining five marriages contrasts each other to reveal Jane's opinions and thoughts on the subject of marriage.

The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which constitutes a successful marriage. One of these characteristics is that the feeling cannot be brought on by appearances, and must graally develop between the two people as they get to know one another. In the beginning, Elizabeth and Darcy were distant from each other because of their prejudice. The series of events which they both experienced gave them the opportunity to understand one another and the time to reconcile their feelings for each other. Thus, their mutual understanding is the foundation of their relationship and will lead them to a peaceful and lasting marriage. This relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance of getting to know one's partner before marrying. The marriage between Jane Bennet and Bingley is also an example of successful marriage. Jane Austen, through Elizabeth, expresses her opinion of this in the novel:

"....really believed all his [Bingley] expectations of felicity, to be rationally founded, because they had for basis the excellent understanding, and super-excellent disposition of Jane, and a general similarity of feeling and taste between her and himself." (Chapter 55)
However, unlike Darcy and Elizabeth, there is a flaw in their relationship. The flaw is that both characters are too gullible and too good-hearted to ever act strongly against external forces that may attempt to separate them:

"You [Jane and Bingley] are each of you so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so easy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will always exceed your income." (Chapter 55)
Obviously, Lydia and Wickham's marriage is an example of an bad marriage. Their marriage was based on appearances, good looks, and youthful vivacity. Once these qualities can no longer be seen by each other, the once strong relationship will slowly fade away. As in the novel, Lydia and Wickham's marriage graally disintegrates; Lydia becomes a regular visitor at her two elder sister's homes when "her husband was gone to enjoy himself in London or Bath." Through their relationship, Jane Austen shows that hasty marriage based on superficial qualities quickly cools and leads to unhappiness.

Although little is told of how Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet got together, it can be inferred by their conversions that their relationship was similar to that of Lydia and Wickham - Mr. Bennet had married a woman he found sexually attractive without realizing she was an unintelligent woman. Mrs. Bennet's favoritism towards Lydia and her comments on how she was once as energetic as Lydia reveals this similarity. Mr. Bennet's comment on Wickham being his favorite son-in-law reinforces this parallelism. The effect of the relationships was that Mr. Bennet would isolate himself from his family; he found refugee in his library or in mocking his wife. Mr. Bennet's self-realization at the end of the novel in which he discovers that his lack of attention towards his family had lead his family to develop the way they are, was too late to save his family. He is Jane Austen's example of a weak father. In these two latter relationships, Austen shows that it is necessary to use good judgement to select a spouse, otherwise the two people will lose respect for each other.

The last example of a marriage is a of a different nature than the ones mentioned above. The marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is based on economics rather than on love or appearance. It was a common practice ring Austen's time for women to marry a husband to save herself from spinsterhood or to gain financial security. However, Jane Austen viewed this as a type of prostitution and disapproved of it. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen dramatizes this form of women inequality and show that women who submits themselves to this type of marriage will have to suffer in tormenting silence as Charlotte does:

"When Mr. Collins said any thing of which his wife might reasonably be ashamed, which certainly was not unseldom, she [Elizabeth] would involuntarily turned her eye on Charlotte. Once or twice she could discern a faint blush; but in general Charlotte wisely did not hear." (Chapter 28)
These five marriages contributes to the theme that a happy and strong marriage takes time to build and must be based on mutual feeling, understanding, and respect. Hasty marriages acting on impulse, and based on superficial qualities will not survive and will lead to inevitable unhappiness.

In Pride and Prejudice, Jane has denounced the elements of marriage and society that she found distasteful. These are the conclusions of her observation of the people in her world. However in her writing, Jane has also reflected her own enjoyment in life among these people with and without their faults.

Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist, a witty and outspoken woman, the second of five daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Charles Bingley leases a home, Netherfield Park, nearby. Mrs. Bennet busies herself to get introctions for her daughters. Elizabeth's oldest sister Jane, kind and trusting to a fault, falls in love with Bingley at the public ball. His even wealthier friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, snubs Elizabeth and the other local women at the ball, repelling them by his rudeness, superciliousness, and haughtiness, and this becomes the subject of considerable discussion and contempt. He starts to take an interest in Elizabeth, but she refuses to dance with him.

Jane visits the Bingley's, walking in the rain, and catches a cold. Elizabeth walks over to nurse her, impressing Darcy with her caring nature and intelligence. There is discussion about what it means for a woman to be ecated, i.e., accomplished. Elizabeth is viewed disparagingly by Bingley's sisters Mrs. Louisa Bingley Hurst and Miss Caroline Bingley, the latter hoping to fix Bingley up instead with Darcy's sister Georgiana and to pair herself up with Darcy. Elizabeth spars verbally with the Bingleys and Darcy about country people, poetry, friendship, reading, pride, etc.

Mr. William Collins, Mr. Bennet's absurdly self-important cousin, newly-ordained parish rector, and future heir to the Bennet's home through male entailment, pays a visit to find a wife. He brags of his wealthy patron Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who proves to be Darcy's aunt.

In town, they meet Mr. George Wickham, the son of Darcy's father's steward. He impresses Elizabeth and tells a tale of being deprived of a living by Darcy against Darcy's father's intentions [subsequently found to be a misrepresentation]. Darcy is pained to see Wickham.

At the ball at Netherfield, Collins appears to be courting Elizabeth. Collins dances badly, then has the audacity to introce himself to Darcy, despite Elizabeth's warning as to such impropriety. Eliz. and Darcy are cool to each other.

Collins proposes to marry Elizabeth, but she refuses-- he cannot believe her no really means no, thinking this is the "usual practice of elegant females". Her mother is upset but her father is relieved that E. has declined.

Bingley and his entourage suddenly move to London without a word to Jane. Mr. Collins shortly proposes marriage to Elizabeth's friend and neighbor Charlotte Lucas, who accepts-- the marriage takes place soon thereafter.

Jane is invited to visit Mrs. Bennet's brother, Mr. & Mrs. Edward Gardiner, in London. There she is seemingly neglected by Bingley [who is kept unaware of her presence by Caroline and Darcy].

Eliz. travels with the Lucases (Sir William and Lady) and their second daughter Maria to visit first Eliz's sister in London and then on to the Collins at Hunsford. They dine with Lady Catherine at her estate Rosings along with her sickly daughter Miss [Anne?] de Bourgh [who is planned for Darcy by her mother]. Eliz. balks at the intrusive questioning by the assertive and self-important Lady Catherine. Darcy & his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam arrive for a visit at Rosings. Eliz. continues to spar with Darcy and discusses her negative thoughts about him with Fitzwilliam.

Darcy visits frequently at the parsonage and Charlotte wonders if he has fallen in love with Elizabeth, but they still are cool to each other. Eliz. learns from Fitzwilliam that Darcy caused Bingley to stop pursuing Jane.

Darcy appears and declares his love for Eizabeth, having struggled futilely against his feelings of her inferiority & revulsion at her mother, sisters, and general lack of superior connections. Eliz. spurns him, prejudiced against him for blaming him for the breaking up Jane's relationship with Bingley, and condemning his pride and haughtiness as well as his apparent injustice to Wichkam. Later, Darcy sends Eliz. a letter explaining that he thought Jane was indifferent to Bingley and explains that Wickham has been deceptive in his claims, citing his attempt to elope with Darcy's 15 y/o sister for her money, his life of dissipation and idleness, and his turning down a living within the church, leading to a final monetary settlement with Darcy etc. Eliz. feels humiliated and understands much better. Soon, they all depart Hunsford.

Mary is the somber and moralistic 3rd Bennet dtr. Eliz.'s fourth sister Kitty (Catherine) and youngest sister Lydia are enamored with the militia quartered nearby. The militia moves to Brighton and Lydia, though only 15, arranges to travel with Colonel Forster and his wife Harriet, to be near the militia, despite Elizabeth's unsuccessful effort to persuade her father to stop Lydia. Eliz. feels much disappointment in her parents.

The Gardiners take Eliz. on a tour, originally intending to go to the Lake country, but deciding instead to got no farther than Derbyshire-- there they decide to visit Darcy's estate Pemberley near Lambton. She finds Darcy well spoken of by his servants and is soon embarrassed to encounter him unexpectedly-- he treats them all with great hospitality. He introces her to his shy sister Georgiana. Miss Bingley again does all she can to dissuade Darcy from favoring Elizabeth.

Eliz. learns in a letter that the irresponsible Lydia has run off with Wickham. She urgently returns home to Longbourne. After a long painful period of uncertainty and general humiliation, the family learns from Mr. Gardiner that they have been located and that Wickham has agreed to marry her for a small monetary consideration. The wayward couple arrive for a cheerful visit, oblivious to the pain they have caused the family. Eliz. learns that Darcy attended their wedding and soon it becomes apparent that Darcy in fact found the couple and has bribed Wickham to marry Lydia to prevent shame to the family and preserve her respectability.

Bingley and Darcy arrive to visit the Bennets. Bingley warms back up to Jane and eventually proposes marriage, bringing new joy to the household. Lady Catherine arrives to demand that Eliz. renounce any intentions on Darcy, insisting he is de facto engaged to her daughter, but she holds her ground against this intimidation. Her father also receives a letter from Collins advising against Eliz. marriage to Darcy. At last, Darcy and Eliz. express their mutual love along with profuse apologies to eqach other for past misunderstandings. He asks for her hand, and the opinion about Darcy in the Bennet household improves remarkably. The kin are notified. Jane and Bingley marry and move thirty miles away. The marriage of Wickham and Lydia begins to cool. Lady Catherine and Miss Bingley reconcile with Elizabeth to some extent. She becomes mistress of Pemberley and becomes good friends with Georgiana.
