約瑟夫·雅各布斯（1854-1916）出生在澳大利亞的悉尼，1872年移居英格蘭，就讀於劍橋大學國王學院，後對人類學產生興趣，成為英格蘭民俗學會重要成員。他用十年時間收集英國民間童話，分兩卷於1890和1894年出版，彌補了英國文學的一項缺憾。
