世界上第一個國際電影節。號稱「國際電影節之父」。1932年8月6日在義大利的名城威尼斯創辦。主要目的在於提高電影藝術水平。1934年舉辦第2屆後每年8月底至9月初舉行一次，為期兩周。1943～1945年因第二次世界大戰一度停辦。大戰結束後於1946年恢復舉行。1932年至1942年，獎項分為最佳故事片、紀錄片、短片、義大利影片、外國影片，以及最佳導演、編劇、男女演員、攝影、音樂等獎。此外，還有特別獎、綜合獎、「墨索里尼杯」、「雙年節杯」等。1946年至1948年，取消了「墨索里尼杯」。1949年增設「聖馬克金獅獎」、「聖馬克銀獅獎」、「聖馬克銅獅獎」等。
