弗蘭克·鮑姆（1856-1919），美國著名作家，「美國童話之父」。《綠野仙蹤》是他的代表作。
本書以虛構的奧芝國為背景，講述美國堪薩斯州的小姑娘多蘿西被龍卷風卷到了一個叫孟奇金的地方，好女巫指點她到翡翠城去找奧芝國大術士幫忙送她回家。路上，她先後遇到了稻草人，鐵皮樵夫與小膽獅。他們結伴而行，克服了一個個困難，終於來到了翡翠城。但等待他們的又是想不到的麻煩……

弗蘭克·鮑姆（1856-1919），美國兒童文學作家。生於紐約州。父親是個桶匠，後來到賓夕法尼亞州開採石油並發了財。
鮑姆的童年是在父親的大庄園里度過的，從小喜歡寫作。鮑姆做了父親以後，常常回憶自己童年時代所聽過的故事。他覺得那些故事枯燥沉悶，講的盡是些令人討厭的道德和訓誡的內容。他自己構想出一些聽了使人愉快的故事，同時把兒歌改編成故事。1897年，他編了一本《鵝媽媽的故事》散文集，出版後獲得成功，又出版一本小詩集和一本兒歌《鵝爸爸的書》。這本書附有精美的插圖，全由他的朋友藝術家W·W·鄧斯洛繪制。此後又出了三本韻文詩和短篇小說。
1900年，鮑姆45歲時寫成《綠野仙蹤》（即《奧茨國的魔術師》）。它的第一版也是由鄧斯洛繪制插圖。其印刷之精緻可與《鵝爸爸的書》媲美。《綠野仙蹤》是美國兒童文學史上20世紀的第一部受到贊賞的童話，從出版一直行銷至今。
鮑姆寫《綠野仙蹤》時，並沒有想到要把它寫成多卷集，可是這部書的成功在讀者中引起越來越大的反響，人們要求把它寫下去的呼聲也越來越高。在這種情況下，鮑姆又寫了《奧茨國的地方》、《多蘿茜與奧茨國的巫師》、《去奧茨國的道路》、《奧茨國的裝翠城》、《奧茨國的奧茨瑪》、《奧茨國的補丁姑娘》、《奧茨國的梯克——托克》、《奧茨國的稻草人》、《奧茨國失蹤的公主》、《奧茨國的鐵皮人》等。他去世後，還出版了他的最後一部著作《奧茨國的格林達》。
40年代，《綠野仙蹤》由美國米高梅公司改編拍製成電影。

Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas until a cyclone arrives, and picks her, her house, and her dog up and deposits them in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. She's helped by the Good Witch of the North, but she's also in trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of her sister; the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames Dorothy.
When a nasty neighbor tries to have her dog put to sleep, Dorothy takes her dog Toto, to run away. A cyclone appears and carries her to the magical land of Oz. Wishing to return, she begins to travel to the Emerald City where a great wizard lives. On her way she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who desperately needs courage. They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them, before the Wicked Witch of the West catches up with them.

Dorothy and her dog Toto live happily with Dorothy』s aunt until, one day, a great storm whisks Dorothy and Toto, along with their house, off to a faraway place. The house lands on, and kills, the Bad Witch of the East, but Dorothy is just eager to get home. The Good Witch tells her that only the wise old Wizard of Oz is able to get her back to her family. Dorothy and Toto set off along the yellow road to the Wizard. They meet a brainless scarecrow, a heartless tin-man and a cowardly lion on the way and all three decide to ask the Wizard to solve their problems too. Before the Wizard will grant their wishes, however, they have to kill the Bad Witch of the West, which Dorothy finally manages to do, thus making all their wishes come true.
