猶如花道與茶道，當入殮師為往生者清潔、著衣與化妝時，每一個專注的動作、專注的眼神，都緊緊牽引著家屬的心。
不協調的大徹大悟？
影片的焦點放在年輕人大悟（本木雅弘）身上，他因為陰差陽錯而進入到入殮師行業，影片藉由他的入門、掙扎以及最終的投入並受到尊重，讓人認識了入殮師這個行業。

不過在導演刻意安排之下，許多情節都以輕喜劇的方式處理了，影片的基調呈現出一種快節奏的溫馨感，平衡了電影中因為太多喪葬場面可能會造成的陰郁感。影片中許多葬禮段落的安排和大悟專注學習當入殮師的過程，仍是相當吸引人的。
父親角色的投射
入殮師的工作既可以蓄勢揭開家族的創傷，也可以弭平痛苦記憶，帶來和諧的祝福。片中殯葬公司的社長，因為喪妻才開始走上這一行。第一次征助手，他比大悟還緊張，還馬上送「訂金」，生怕對方跑了。但這之後，他臉上那種莫測高深的表情，好像已經認定大悟是天生要協助死者走上未來旅途的最佳人選，是全片的精華所在。
