《摩西十诫》据说是上帝在西乃山的山顶亲自传达给摩西的，是上帝对以色列人的告诫。上帝本人将这些话刻在石碑上，送给摩西。但是，后来摩西看到族人根本不听从这些诫条，一怒之下就将石碑毁了。上帝又命令摩西再制作新的石碑，完成后，放在约柜（Ark of the Covenant）里。
以色列人将约柜看作圣物，放在圣殿里，任何人不得擅自触摸。《圣经》里记载有人因为擅自触摸约柜而被雷击致死。而且，有外人从至圣所的帐门窥望过，发现约柜的上方经常都有云雾积聚。后世的科学家根据这些纪录，推断可能在约柜内放置了一种简单的生物电池，就像在古埃及陵墓发现的那一种。电的积聚使水汽积聚，并使触摸的人触电。

“摩西十诫”在《圣经》出现了两次，一次是在《出埃及记》（Exos），另一次是在《申命记》（Deuteronomy）。两次语句有差异，但是基本内容是一致的。
《圣经》中并没有明确提出“十诫”，具体十条诫文是后人总结归类的，因此，各个教派的“十诫”条文都不完全一样。
下面是经总结后的“摩西十诫”。这是基督教新教的分法，天主教的分法与此不同，第一条和第二条是连在一起的，而第十条被分成了两个部分。
