科学家认为，自从6500万年前恐龙灭绝之后，地球曾经历了一段历史上温度最高的时期。从大约3400万年前，即南极冰盖形成后，地球的温度才逐渐开始降低。而这两种企鹅在赤道水域生活的时间，都要远远早于地球开始降温的时期。
由秘鲁、阿根廷和美国科学家共同组成的研究小组，对这些在2005年发现的化石残骸进行了详细的研究。这一研究结果发表在本周的《美国国家科学院学报》网站上。美国北卡罗来纳州大学的古生物学家朱莉娅·克拉克表示：“我们以前总是倾向于认为，企鹅是习惯低温环境的动物——就连今天生活在赤道区域的小蓝企鹅也是这样。”克拉克说，“但这些新发现的化石，却可以追溯到过去6500万年中地球上最热的一段时间。这些证据表明，企鹅到达低纬度地区的时间，比人们之前的估计还要早3000万年。”[1]
与此同时，两种新企鹅在进化过程中的各种特征，以及它们的生存年代和分布情况，也使研究人员必须对企鹅的整个“家谱”进行改写。和地球上生活的企鹅种类不同，身形巨大的远古企鹅拥有长而窄的喙，尤其是巨型企鹅，它的喙特别长，就像长矛一样。克拉克猜测，这种喙很可能是用来帮助高个子的巨型企鹅吞食大型猎物。不仅如此，远古企鹅还能潜到很深的水下，并能像现代“亲戚”那样在水面下优雅地“滑翔”，边滑翔边捉小鱼吃。[1]

2外型特征
企鹅共有18个独立物种，体型最大的的物种是帝企鹅，平均约1.1米高，体重35千克以上。最小的企鹅物种是小蓝企鹅（又称神仙企鹅），体高40厘米，重1千克。本身有其独特的结构， 企鹅羽毛密度比同一体型的鸟类大三至四倍，这些羽毛的作用是调节体温。 虽然企鹅双脚基本上与其它飞行鸟类差不多，但它们的骨骼坚硬，并且脚比较短且平。这种特征配合有如二只桨的短翼，使企鹅可以在水底“飞行”。南极虽然酷寒难当，但企鹅经过数千万年暴风雪的磨炼，全身的羽毛已变成重叠、密接的鳞片状。这种特殊的羽衣，不但海水难以浸透，就是气温在零下近百摄氏度，也休想攻破它保温的防线。南极陆地多，海面宽，丰富的海洋浮游生物成了企鹅充沛的食物来源。[1]
企鹅是一种最古老的游禽，它很可能穿上冰甲之前，就已经在南极安家落户。南极陆地多，海面宽，丰富的海洋浮游盐腺可以排泄多余的盐份。 企鹅双眼由于有平坦的眼角膜，所以可在水底及水面看东西。双眼可以把影像传至脑部作作望远集成使之产生望远作用。企鹅是一种鸟类，因此企鹅没有牙齿。企鹅的舌头以及上颚有倒刺，以适应吞食鱼虾等食物，但是这并不是他们的牙齿。[3]

捕食
企鹅以海洋浮游动物，主要是南极磷虾为食，有时也捕食一些腕足类、乌贼和小鱼。企鹅的胃口不错，每只企鹅每天平均能吃0.75公斤食物，主要是南极磷虾。因此，企鹅作为捕食者在南大洋食物链中起着重要作用。企鹅在南极捕食的磷虾约3317万吨，占南极鸟类总消耗量的90%，相当于鲸捕食磷虾的一半。[1]
性情
企鹅的性情憨厚、大方，十分逗人。尽管企鹅的外表气度不凡，显得有点高傲，甚至盛气凌人，但是，当人们靠近它们时，它们并不望人而逃，有时好像若无其事，有时好像羞羞答答，不知所措，有时又东张西望，交头接耳，唧唧喳喳。那种憨厚并带有几分傻劲的神态，真是惹人发笑，也许，它们很少见到人，是一种好奇的心理使然吧。[4]

企鹅游泳的速度非常快，皇帝企鹅一小时可游约十公里，白顶企鹅则有一小时游三十六公里的纪录，是所有鸟类中游得最快的。企鹅常常用海豚式游泳，也就是潜泳一段距离，露出水面换气后，再潜下去继续游。事实上，企鹅也是鸟类当中的潜水冠军，它曾有潜入水中18分钟，和潜入水下265米的纪录。[6]
通过观察与企鹅紧密相关的海鸟，科学家们确定，适合于飞行的翅膀并不适合潜水和游泳。长期以来都有几个理论解释为什么企鹅无法飞行。一个观点认为，一些物种是因为缺乏地面的捕食者而失去了飞行能力。另一个观点是一种生物力学假设：当鸟类飞行和潜水的时候，它必须使用翅膀进行两种不同的工作。从生物力学假设，无法打造出同时擅长这两种工作的翅膀。

生活史因种的体形大小不同以及地理分布而异。同一种类的繁殖周期还与纬度有关。有的种长途迁移到内陆的祖传营巢区去产卵，斑嘴环企鹅和小蓝企鹅一年繁殖2次，大多数种一年仅繁殖1次。而王企鹅则三年内繁殖2次。王企鹅和帝企鹅每次产卵1枚，而其他种则产2枚，偶为3枚。大多数企鹅在南半球的春夏季繁殖。巴布亚企鹅的某些种群也在冬季繁殖。帝企鹅发育时间长，故在秋季开始繁殖，以使幼雏在成活率机会最大的夏季产出。
当企鹅入群和离群时，常有种种表演和鸣叫。求偶配对时，常有求偶鸣叫，鸣声在两性之间有二态性。合恩角企鹅鸣声似驴鸣。到繁殖季节，帝企鹅能找到旧巢及旧配偶。除帝企鹅只由雄鸟担任外，所有种都由两性孵卵。在交配时企鹅群中十分热闹，鸣声聒耳，到孵卵时则一片寂静。卵和雏鸟的死亡率决定于气候条件、幼鸟在生殖种群的百分比和敌害等因素，一般为产卵总数的40-80%。产卵后，雌鸟常常离群到海洋觅食，约10-20天后回来替换雄鸟，以后便以一两周为期互相轮换。但雌性帝企鹅从鸟群到海洋需要走80-160公里，一直到64天孵卵期之末才能返回；此时正值南极严冬，雄帝企鹅互相依靠在一起，每个雄帝企鹅都会将卵置于足上孵化，并靠体内储存的脂肪生活；直到严冬过去，雌性帝企鹅回来后，雄帝企鹅将幼雏移交于雌性帝企鹅足上。
企鹅幼雏从卵壳孵出需24-48小时，孵出后即表现有取食行为，将嘴放入亲鸟口腔，取食成液状的吐出 的甲壳类或鱼类食物。开始时，幼鸟藏在亲鸟身下；逐渐长大之后，幼鸟停留在亲鸟体侧。幼鸟从孵化到完全独立的期限，在较小的种要2个月，帝企鹅需5个半月，王企鹅12-14个月。半成熟的幼雏会成大群由成鸟照管，如在“托儿所”内一般。
成鸟每年更换全部羽毛一次。换羽时不能入水，通常躲在鸟群以外的一个掩蔽地点。企鹅游泳迅速，用鳍肢作为推进器。需高速前进时，常常跳离水面，每跳一次可在空中前进1公尺或者更远，并在此期间呼吸。在陆上则步态笨拙可笑，但前进速度甚快，以前肢为平衡器。可在岩石上灵活地行动，亦可在冰雪上以腹部著地滑行，以足及前肢为推进器。企鹅能藉太阳的位置来定向。[1]

8物种现状编辑
南极企鹅的种类并不多，但数量相当可观。据鸟类学家长期观察和估算，南极地区现有企鹅近1.2亿只，占世界企鹅总数的87%，占南极海鸟总数的90%。数量最多的是阿德雷企鹅，约有5000万只，其次是帽带企鹅，约300万只，数量最少的是帝企鹅，约57万只。[4]
豹斑海豹，只要企鹅下水，它就会快速游过去，吃掉企鹅。最可怕的莫过于海豹了，一只豹斑海豹一天可吃超过15只的阿德利企鹅，但它通常是捕捉较弱或生病的企鹅。大贼鸥和南极大韄，它们会伺机残害未受保护的企鹅宝宝，海狮、海豹、虎鲸等也会对企鹅产生威胁。
