弗兰克·鲍姆（1856-1919），美国著名作家，“美国童话之父”。《绿野仙踪》是他的代表作。
本书以虚构的奥芝国为背景，讲述美国堪萨斯州的小姑娘多萝西被龙卷风卷到了一个叫孟奇金的地方，好女巫指点她到翡翠城去找奥芝国大术士帮忙送她回家。路上，她先后遇到了稻草人，铁皮樵夫与小胆狮。他们结伴而行，克服了一个个困难，终于来到了翡翠城。但等待他们的又是想不到的麻烦……

弗兰克·鲍姆（1856-1919），美国儿童文学作家。生于纽约州。父亲是个桶匠，后来到宾夕法尼亚州开采石油并发了财。
鲍姆的童年是在父亲的大庄园里度过的，从小喜欢写作。鲍姆做了父亲以后，常常回忆自己童年时代所听过的故事。他觉得那些故事枯燥沉闷，讲的尽是些令人讨厌的道德和训诫的内容。他自己构想出一些听了使人愉快的故事，同时把儿歌改编成故事。1897年，他编了一本《鹅妈妈的故事》散文集，出版后获得成功，又出版一本小诗集和一本儿歌《鹅爸爸的书》。这本书附有精美的插图，全由他的朋友艺术家W·W·邓斯洛绘制。此后又出了三本韵文诗和短篇小说。
1900年，鲍姆45岁时写成《绿野仙踪》（即《奥茨国的魔术师》）。它的第一版也是由邓斯洛绘制插图。其印刷之精致可与《鹅爸爸的书》媲美。《绿野仙踪》是美国儿童文学史上20世纪的第一部受到赞赏的童话，从出版一直行销至今。
鲍姆写《绿野仙踪》时，并没有想到要把它写成多卷集，可是这部书的成功在读者中引起越来越大的反响，人们要求把它写下去的呼声也越来越高。在这种情况下，鲍姆又写了《奥茨国的地方》、《多萝茜与奥茨国的巫师》、《去奥茨国的道路》、《奥茨国的装翠城》、《奥茨国的奥茨玛》、《奥茨国的补丁姑娘》、《奥茨国的梯克——托克》、《奥茨国的稻草人》、《奥茨国失踪的公主》、《奥茨国的铁皮人》等。他去世后，还出版了他的最后一部著作《奥茨国的格林达》。
40年代，《绿野仙踪》由美国米高梅公司改编拍制成电影。

Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas until a cyclone arrives, and picks her, her house, and her dog up and deposits them in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. She's helped by the Good Witch of the North, but she's also in trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of her sister; the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames Dorothy.
When a nasty neighbor tries to have her dog put to sleep, Dorothy takes her dog Toto, to run away. A cyclone appears and carries her to the magical land of Oz. Wishing to return, she begins to travel to the Emerald City where a great wizard lives. On her way she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who desperately needs courage. They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them, before the Wicked Witch of the West catches up with them.

Dorothy and her dog Toto live happily with Dorothy’s aunt until, one day, a great storm whisks Dorothy and Toto, along with their house, off to a faraway place. The house lands on, and kills, the Bad Witch of the East, but Dorothy is just eager to get home. The Good Witch tells her that only the wise old Wizard of Oz is able to get her back to her family. Dorothy and Toto set off along the yellow road to the Wizard.
