In Johnny Depp, Tim Burton found an actor who perfectly captured the dark, quirky tone the director sought for his films. Never has the pairing (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is their fourth collaboration) been more successful. Depp is utterly wonderful in the role of the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. In Pirates Of The Caribbean, Depp modeled his performance of Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards. For his mischievous, childlike depiction of Wonka, he blends a pinch of Pee Wee Herman, a dash of Andy Warhol and the palid features of Michael Jackson to create an enchanting and memorable character.

Depp's performance alone is worth the price of admission, but when combined with Burton's idiosyncratic vision, Roald Dahl's cherished story and a strong supporting cast, headed by the adorable Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket, then Charlie And The Chocolate Factory becomes an irresistible treat.

Technology has come along way since Dahl's book was first adapted for the screen in 1971 with Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka. Even the author, who died in 1990, would have marveled at the wondrous world Burton has created. Everything, from the ramshackle home of the Bucket family to the magical factory with its river of chocolate, has been conjured from a combination of a vivid imagination, fantastical sets and marvelous FX. The latter, Burton using only when no other alterative was available. It's why he had dozens of squirrels trained to perform difficult tasks but used just one actor (Deep Roy) to play all the Oompa Loompas.

"This is a story of an ordinary boy," states the opening voice-over. And although Charlie may be ordinary, it's immediately clear that where he lives is anything but. His poverty struck family is crammed into a dilapidated shack that leans at a gravity-defying angle. Despite their circumstance they are impossibly upbeat, a trait exemplified by young Charlie. The young boy's obsession with the nearby chocolate factory where his grandfather (David Kelly) once worked reaches a climax when he finds one of the five lucky golden tickets offering a tour of the premises which have remained closed to outsiders for 15 years.

The four other winners are loathsome, spoilt brats who are accompanied on the tour, given by the normally reclusive Wonka, by their equally obnoxious parents. "Enjoy yourselves, but don't touch," commands Wonka who clearly has little patience or affinity with the children. There is something a little perverse in a children's story in which most of the youngsters are so loathsome. It's certainly a feature Burton and screenwriter John August exploit to the full, particularly in the creative punishments that befall those who misbehave. Indeed, there is a sinister undercurrent to much of the film, one that perhaps borders on inappropriate with the inclusion of a spoof on the shower sequence from Hitchcock's Psycho.

The story's darker shades, most of which stem from Wonka's loveless upbringing at the hands of a strict father (Christopher Lee), are no doubt what attracted Burton in the first place. There are also some very touching moments involving Willy and Charlie, not to mention some hysterical ones, mostly courtesy of Depp whose expressive delivery solicits a laugh from even the most offhand comment.

When done well, children's films have the ability to captivate the imagination of old and young alike, distilling life into its most essential and simplistic elements. With the collective genius of Burton, Depp and Dahl, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory does that in the most inspired and enjoyable way possible.

Charlie later helped Mr. Wonka and his father misunderstanding untie, because Mr. Wonka's father is a dentist, never let Mr. Wonka candy. But Mr. Wonka and quarrel father to open a sugar factory. 《查理和巧克力工廠》
Tim確實給了我們一個漂亮的巧克力工廠，裡面有小矮人，有最純的巧克力，有用糖果做成的房間，有可以把物體傳送到電視裡面的裝置，可是那種讓人一亮的豐富的想像力卻沒有出現。「原來故事可以這樣寫的」，這樣的感覺，沒有了。而整部電影直到最後，最可愛的人物卻不是Charlie，不是Willy Wonka，更不是另外四個得到Golden Ticket的孩子和他們的父母，而是查理家的那一群老人。Charlie作為故事的主角，只是傳統的早當家的好孩子，懂事善良還懂得養家，有著和年齡不相稱的一臉深沉；Willy Wonka則是又自私又神經質得緊；四個小孩是四個極端，貪吃的被寵壞的超自負的後現代的（汗，再加幾個就可以拍七宗罪了），從他們出場的那一刻開始，我們就可以猜到他們的下場；而裡面的大人，從陪伴的父母到商店裡企圖買下Charlie的Golden Ticket的大人，甚至是賣糖果的大叔，都顯得蒼白、無作為而臉譜化。最後，能夠讓我會心一笑的，就只有那些「加起來有381歲」的老人們了。也是因為他們，才讓這電影留著一份溫馨的感覺吧。雖然仍然是熟悉的橋段，可家庭的溫暖永不褪色，可是除了這一頭一尾的半個多小時，中間的那些俗套而公式的情節，能讓觀眾滿意嗎？至少我沒有。

Tim did give us a beautiful chocolate factory where there are dwarfs , purest chocolate, rooms made from candies and equipments which can send the objects inside the TV set,but the abundant imagination which enlightens us didn't make its appearance."The original story can be like this",such feeling disappeared.And unitl the end of the whole movie,the favorite character was not Charlie or Willy Wonka,nor were the children and their parents who got four Golden Ticket,but the bunch of old man in Charlie's home.As the progatonist of the story,Charlie was the tranditional good boy who took charge of home at an early age.He was kind and knew how to make both ends meet with a deep look on his face which was inappropriate with his age;Willy Wonka was both selfish and hysterical;four kids were four extremes who were greedy and spoiled belonging to the arrogant post-modern grown man.Since they showed up,we could guess their results;regarding the grown-ups,from the accompanying parents to the grown-ups who tried to buy Charlie's Golden Ticket,even the uncle who was selling the candies,they were all so pale and lacked indiviality.Finally,what made me laugh happily was only those old men whose age added up to 381 years old.It was also because of them that made this movie have some warm feeling.Though the story was still familiar,the warmth of family would never fade away.But besides the beginning and end which lasted more than half and hour,can the conventional story in the middle satisfy the audiences?At least I was not satisfied.

This movie was supposedly meant to follow Roald Dahl classic children's book? I'm not sure what book they're following, but there's stuff in this film that would make poor Mr. Dahl gag on an Everlasting Gobstopper.

This is easily the weakest work for both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Burton simply has no concept of the joyous celebration and positive message of the original manuscript. Instead, he delivers a mean spirited and misguided interpretation that is needlessly grim and depressing. Depp appears to be concocting a character which is a grotesque montage of The Wicked Witch of the West, Michael Jackson, and Carrot Top. He always has some psychotic expression on his face which distracts you from the main story. The Oompa Loompas (really one guy multiplied by awful CGI) are sinister looking, and their songs stink. The children vary from boring to annoying.

As if this isn't bad enough, the script includes ugly back stories about Wonka that add nothing, disrupt the flow of the story, and transform a character originally written as well-intentioned but cautiously secretive into a vile, selfish, brutal freak of nature devoid of any redeeming qualities at all. The tacked on sequence about Wonka's family problems is just excruciatingly painful to sit through. A definite misfire on this one.
