『貳』 急求《國王的演講》《肖申克的救贖》《公主日記》《重返十七歲》《幸福來敲門》英文觀後感
《國王的演講》:
This is the story of King George VI (Colin Firth), starting when he was only the Duke of York and 2nd in line for the British throne behind his brother David (Guy Pierce). Most non-Brits are familiar with the older brother as Edward VIII, the man who gave up the throne for the love of a divorced American named Wallis Simpson (Eve Best). That famed tale has made it to the screen before, but this movie adds more evidence to the claim that behind every great story is an even greater story waiting to be told.
For the Duke of York was a lifelong and quite severe stammerer and The King's Speech is about how he overcame it with the love of his wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) and a speech therapist named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) to help lead Britain through the darkest days of World War II. That's a little more interesting than star-crossed lovers, isn't it?
The superb work of the cast is first thing to praise here. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are tremendous, Firth as a man trapped by both his impairment and his place in society and Rush as a man split between his thoroughly ordinary life and his unorthodox profession. Those two are then backed up by virtually flawless turns from actor after actor, with Helena Bonham Carter as the resolute Elizabeth and Guy Pierce as the non-malicious but terribly flawed David leading the way.
Secondly, there are an amazing number of ideas woven together in this script. It's not just about a man overcoming a personal defect and the emotional scars it causes and was caused by. It also deals with the revolutionary effect 20th century communication technology would have on the role of constitutional monarch, the last time in modern history when a monarch would be called upon to be more than a tourist attraction, the terrible burden of responsibility without authority and the isolation of being seen as a king first by even your own daughters, the gathering storm of World War II, the epic scope of the British Empire and what it really meant, and how love and friendship are often the only things that get us through life.
Thirdly, The King's Speech is a damn enjoyable film. It laces humor, both high and low, through the drama and neither dwells obsessively on any of its themes nor desperately reaches for profundity at any moment. I can imagine someone writing a play about George VI and Lionel Logue that's nothing but the two men talking in a room for two hours, focusing only on the stammer and the childhood trauma that possibly caused it. I can also imagine such a play being extremely well written. What I can't imagine is such a play being fun for most folks to sit through. The most impressive thing about this movie is that it never tries to impress you. These filmmaker understand the first job is to hold the audience's attention, not take them for granted as though the audience should feel privileged for being told a story.
This is a splendid film on just about every level. If you haven't seen it, go out of your way to do so.
《肖申克的救贖》:
None of the usual otherworld creatures that populate the works of Stephen King are to be found in The Shawshank Redemption. But the real world of that Maine prison has some bizarre rules of its own and there's a whole new reality within those walls.
In the tradition of Cool Hand Luke and Birdman Of Alcatraz comes Tim Robbins who was a banker on the outside, but when he caught his wife cheating on him with a golf pro from their country club, he's convicted of putting eight bullets in them, four apiece and tried and sentenced to two consecutive life terms in Shawshank prison. Like Luke and Bob Stroud he works out his own rehabilitation and rebels against the prison system.
He may be a con, but Robbins still has all his knowledge of finances and pretty soon he's made himself quite invaluable to the warden and the rest of the staff at the prison. At the same time he and the cell block scrounger Morgan Freeman develop a close personal relationship. In the end they beat the system in a most unique way.
There have been some classic prison films made ever since The Big House at the dawn of the talkies. Two I've already mentioned. My favorite prison film is Robert Redford's Brubaker, but The Shawshank Redemption comes pretty close. As does The Green Mile which was also directed by Frank Darabont.
Darabont got an Oscar nomination as did the film itself and as did Morgan Freeman for Best Actor. The Shawshank Redemption was in for a flock more Oscar nominations in 1994. A couple other good performances are that of James Whitmore the institutionalized con who is there for 50 years and paroled and just can't make it on the outside. He will break your heart as will Gil Bellows who plays a fresh, but rather likable young con who runs afoul of the warden.
Speaking of which Bob Gunton as the warden will positively chill you with his corruption. You would have to go back all the way to the James Cagney classic, The Mayor Of Hell where Dudley Digges was the warden of boys reformatory to find a warden that is as sanctimonious and as corrupt as Gunton. This is a man who gives Bibles out to each inmate hoping that the reading of the Good Book will improve the moral fiber of the convicts. At the same time he's raking in money every which way he can and a rather special punishment is meted out to him by Robbins.
The Shawshank Redemption may not have monsters and other worldly creatures that normally characterize a Stephen King story. But the world of Shawshank prison is bizarre enough for any normal person if you see this wonderfully crafted and acted film.

As we all know :The Princess Diaries is a modern day fairy tale about Mia (Hathaway) who lives in San Francisco with her divorced mother. One day, her estranged grandmother (Andrews) comes to visit with a proposal for her: She would like Mia to be her successor and become Princess of Genovia. Hilarity ensues because Mia is pretty much a regular teen who is clumsy, awkward and in desperate need of a professional makeover, so she spends the next several weeks in etiquette lessons, getting "re-done" and trying to decide if being a princess is what she really wants in life.
The film was cute, at times extremely corny, but watcheable. It featured surprisingly decent acting by Hathaway, who made up for the horrible Mandy Moore. I especially enjoyed Hector Elizondo, a good character actor who was kind of hilarious doing his best Shaft impersonation as the Queen's head of security. Heather Matarazzo who was also featured as Mia's best friend, continues in her "quirky girl" tradition, but still can't live up to her role in Welcome to the Dollhouse.
This is one of the few "kid's movies" that I wouldn't hesitate to watch with a kid, because it's tolerable. It's also so predictable that if you snooze in the middle of it you won't miss anything when you wake up.
『捌』 用英語寫一篇公主日記的觀後感
I loved this movie and although it may have been slightly cliché, the dialog was quite smart and it was quite a funny movie. I think that if you expect the movie to be Oscar worthy, it will obviously fall short. But as it only attempts to be a sweet story about a misfit 15 year old turned princess, it completely lives up to it's potential. I think that Julie Andrews completely made the movie and that Anne Hathaway also did an excellent job. The movie is great for people of all ages because it has a simplistic plot yet has great one liners and great repartee between the characters of the Queen and Princess Mia. I also think that the minor characters are great also because they provide even more comic relief.
