所谓YMCA，其实是Young Men`s Christian Association 的英文简写，中文名“基督教青年会”；它是一个遍布全世界的基督教青年组织，发源于英国伦敦，是由一位英国基督徒青年侨治威廉(George Williams)于公元1844年所立的。

乔治威廉于公元1821年10月11日出生在英国西南半岛一个典型农村Somerset的农家之中，他是家中排行第八的幺子，从小就帮忙兄长们务农。当乔治年龄渐长，因有识于自己的体格、性情皆不适于农业，乃与其兄商量，欲往都市谋生。乔治威廉16岁那年，便只身前往Brigewater市，在一卖市商的店中开始其学徒生涯。

在家乡乔治原为基督教圣公会的会友，到了伦敦后却参加该市的公理会，并在教会中担任主日学教员的事奉。当时美国有一名布道家(Charles G. Finney)，是一位福音实行家，他主张基督徒必须要信仰与生活合一，培养高尚的道德生活，并不受教派的拘束，他的著作畅销欧美，对帮乔治威廉信仰上的成长，及日后创办YMCA的动机有深远的影响。

1841年，乔治威廉担任学徒期满后，便前往伦敦圣保罗大教堂附近的一家大布店Hitchcock and Rogers服务。当时店中和乔治威廉同样年轻的雇员共有一百四十名，而伦敦市内则有十五万名类似的人。在高度工业化的英国，农村青年大量涌向都市谋生，在长达十三至十四的钟头的工作时间下，大部的年轻劳工得不到充分的休息与正常的娱乐生活，再加上工商业竞争激烈的压力及常常加班的劳累，许多人染上了酗酒的恶习，导玫生活放纵与堕落。

乔治威廉在这种工成环境中，幸有几位很好的属灵同伴，大家聚集读经或分享查理士芬尼的著作，并每日一起祷告，常达两年之久，并图改善全体雇员的道德生活。他们的热心不久竟感动了布行的老板，不但使他悔改信主，还经常支助经费及参加他们的聚会。此后，他们的「青年宣道社」(Young Men’s Missionary Society)、查经班及「青年生活改良社」(Young Men’s Improvement Society)陆续成立，这种帮助年轻劳工重建信仰与提高道德水准的风气，逐渐影片到邻近的工厂与商店，并促进日后YMCA组织的成立。

1844年6月6日，包括乔治威廉在内的十二位基督徒青年，在伦敦正式成立基督教青年会(YMCA)。由于这十二位人发起分属于四个不同的教派(英国圣公会、卫理公会、公理会、浸信会)，因此基督教青年会自始即为一个超教派的组织。自YMCA成立后，由于其目标正确、聚会吸引人而使会员不断增加，在借用咖啡馆聚会场地不敷使用，迁至Radley’s Hotel的酒吧聚会。并在举办演讲及布道会时，开放给非基督徒参加，俾使更多人能够加入YMCA。

不久，英国各地不同的行业皆陆续成立YMCA，而伦敦YMCA于1845年开始聘请T. H. Tarlton为首任干事，使YMCA正式进入专业服化的层次。

1851年，世界万国博览会在英国伦敦举行，这些士气高昂的YMCA领袖们趁机将基督教青年会组织介绍给各国的观光客。许多人因此对YMCA运动深感兴趣，也导致日后YMCA运动在世界各国迅速的扩展。同年11月25日，英属加拿大Montreal City首先成立YMCA，接着12月29日美国波士顿亦即成立其YMCA。

四年后(1855年)，世界万国博览会易地于法国巴黎举行，而英国及美欧各国YMCA领袖也再度借机于巴黎集会。这些来自八个国家中36个不同YMCA的代表，于同年8月22日召开首次基督教青年会世界大会，在99位代表的协议下，决定正式组织「基督教青年会世界协会」(The World Alliance of YMCAs)，并在瑞士日内瓦为永久会址，做为全世界YMCA的总枢。同时会中通过「巴黎本旨」(The Paris Basis)：「基督教青年会之旨趣，在联合同道青年，即凡愿奉耶稣基督为上帝与救主，心信躬行为其门徒，更愿推广天国于青年之间者。」成为各国YMCA共同的宗旨与运动的方针。从此以后，世界各国YMCA代表们，每四年必聚集召开世界大会。

十九世纪末，美国城市青年会和学校青年会十分发达，但美国青年会的领袖们并不以此为己足，在响应十九世纪基督教世界宣教的同时，曾发起国外YMCA拓展运动，以协助工业后进国家成立基督教青年会。「北美基督教青年会协会」(The International Committee of YMCAs of the United States and Canada)(以下简称北美协会)，就是推动这个运动的领导机关，是1879年由美国和加拿大两国青年会联合组成的，对日后扶植我国基督教青年会的成立与发展贡献尤大。
