影片开始于1861年美国南北战争爆发前夕，佐治亚州一个名叫塔拉（Tara）的庄园。斯佳丽·奥哈拉（Scarlett O'Hara）是庄园主爱尔兰移民杰拉尔德·奥哈拉（Gerald O'Hara）和妻子埃伦（Ellen）的三个女儿中的长女。她爱上了阿希礼·威尔克斯（Ashley Wilkes），而阿希礼却选择了表妹玫兰妮·汉密尔顿（Melanie Hamilton），并定于次日在12棵橡树庄园举行烧烤，同时宣布两人订婚。

提姆波顿（Tim Burton）的最新作品《地狱新娘》（Corpse Bride），与十二年前同样作成黑色基调的Stop-motion动画电影《圣诞夜惊魂》（The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993）有许多共通点，单就音乐上来说，担任配乐创作，兼写词、曲的丹尼叶夫曼（Danny Elfman）都亲自替剧中角色配音、配唱，而且剧中人物的唱做方式，皆颇有音乐剧的质感。《地狱新娘》与《圣诞夜惊魂》故事里，也都存在着两个完全不同的世界，配乐创作若要依样画葫芦倒也可行，然而丹尼叶夫曼对两者投入的概念却不尽相同。
《圣诞夜惊魂》的Overture，很清楚地展现出叶夫曼与波顿首度合作的Pee Wee's Big Adventure那种欢闹气氛，一连串上行音符，配合明显的铃声节拍，带出高昂情绪，直指圣诞节前夕的时间点。用来与之相对照的歌曲This is Halloween则是剧中万圣节世界的灵魂所在，三个下行音符，被用来对应Halloween一词的三个音节，强化音乐动机与故事主题的连结性。清楚确立主题后，This is Halloween与其它几首歌曲的旋律，就成了整部《圣诞夜惊魂》配乐的主干。

这样的音乐伏笔，随后在The Piano Duet一幕发酵；地狱新娘Emily在钢琴键盘上起了一个与Victor钢琴主题相关连的旋律，接着Victor加入，将旋律转化成自己先前弹奏过的主题，开始了两人的四手联弹，男女主角一起坐在钢琴前透过乐音交流，效果比什么深情的对唱都要来得强烈。

音响设计方面，音色轻盈且古意盎然的大键琴（Harpsichord）让时代设定于十九世纪的《地狱新娘》之古代气息加分不少（虽然那个时代大键琴已注定被钢琴所淘汰）。被一些恐怖电影配乐用到浮滥的管风琴，也出现在作品中（如Victoria's Escape），所幸只是用来调和音乐氛围，而没有过度装神弄鬼；事实上，对于处理鬼怪题材早已建立出一套自我哲学的叶夫曼，亦用不着那样媚俗。
整体而言，两部作品虽各具趣味，但《地狱新娘》着实玩出较多的花样。之所以能够如此，即因为配乐与剧中的歌曲保持着适当距离，避开被歌曲旋律牵着鼻子走的尴尬，而挣得更大的音乐表现空间，是相较之下的突破。
