Will Smith is perpetually underrated as an actor because he rarely challenges himself: For every "Ali," he seems to make five or 10 movies like "Bad Boys II" or "Wild Wild West," which trade on his relaxed affability but don't require much more than a rakish grin. "The Pursuit of Happyness" (and yes, I'll get to the spelling in a minute) therefore comes as a pleasant reminder that Smith, when called upon, can deliver some rather more complicated goods. As Chris Gardner, a struggling single father in '80s San Francisco, Smith looks haggard and weary; you occasionally hear a bit of a tremble in his voice. He's on the verge of breaking down but is determined to hold it together for the sake of his son.
The real-life Chris Gardner, on whose story the film is based, overcame poverty and homelessness to become a successful stockbroker. (His memoir, also called "The Pursuit of Happyness," was recently published. Some significant changes have been made between Gardner's real story and the movie version.) In the film, which begins with Chris' wife, Linda (Thandie Newton), on the verge of leaving him and their 5-year-old son, Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, Will Smith's real-life son), we watch Chris — then a not-too-successful salesman of medical instruments — talk his way into a stockbroker internship at Dean Witter, only to find that it is unpaid.
Determined to climb the ladder and make a better life for Christopher, he accepts the internship, and we watch the father/son o move from apartment to motel room to homeless shelter, with a few nights in a men's room in a BART station along the way. Throughout, Chris is haunted by a mural outside his son's day-care center, which includes the Declaration of Independence's phrase about man's inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It's misspelled on the mural as "happyness," which annoys him — he wants his son to learn things correctly — but also seems to serve as a challenge.
Smith creates a palpable warmth with his son; his Chris is motivated by a fierce desire to keep the world safe for his precious child. Jaden Smith (now 8 years old, and a charmer) is a natural onscreen, even throwing a convincing tantrum at one point: This little boy is a nice kid but no angel. Their performances are the reason to watch the movie. We know exactly where "The Pursuit of Happyness" is going, and some of the plot devices created for the movie by screenwriter Steve Conrad (such as Chris constantly managing to lose — and find — the instruments he sells, and being a Rubik's Cube whiz) feel a bit cute.
But director Gabriele Muccino finds the heart of the film in the bond between Chris and Christopher, and in Chris' realistically depicted downhill trajectory; poverty, here, is as close as a missed sale. Ultimately, the real Chris Gardner emerges as an inspirational American success story — and Will Smith emerges as a fine and nuanced actor.
=======================================================
Among the inalienable rights promised in the preamble of the Declaration of Independence, happiness is the only one not guaranteed. We are theoretically assured of life and liberty, but happiness we are left to pursue on our own. "The Pursuit of Happyness," a routine domestic drama starring Will Smith, is the story of one man's unwavering pursuit for a better life (and presumably happiness with an "i") against long odds.
The movie is "inspired by a true story," that of Chris Gardner, who was among San Francisco's working homeless in the early '80s and managed to pull himself and his young son up by the bootstraps. "Inspired by" is an interesting phrase because the movie is more inspiring than inspired. The man's struggles are emotionally engaging, but dramatically it lacks the layering of a "Kramer vs. Kramer," which it superficially resembles.
This is a much lower-key performance than we're used to seeing from Smith, and he pulls it off admirably. He plays the fictionalized Gardner as an intelligent, energetic guy who can't catch a break. In fact, in the sluggish Bay Area economy of 1981, he's losing ground. He's invested his family's money in a load of cutting-edge bone-density scanners that, unfortunately for him, provide a slightly better image than an X-ray at twice the cost.
Though the subject matter is serious, the film itself is rather slight, and it relies on the actor to give it any energy. Even in a more modest register, Smith is a very appealing leading man, and he makes Gardner's plight compelling.
Running from doctor's office to hospital peddling his scanners, we see Chris' plentiful people skills at work. Still, there's not enough money coming in, and his wife, Linda (Thandie Newton), who's been working double shifts in a laundry, leaves him to care alone for their 5-year-old son, Christopher (played by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's son, 7-year-old Jaden Christopher Syre Smith).
With his finances at less than zero, Chris embarks on an unpaid six-month internship at the end of which one of 20 hopefuls will land a job as a stockbroker. Staying one step ahead of the taxman and moving from apartment to motel to shelter to subway station, Chris is a model of persistence as he clings to his dream.
The most effective aspect of the film is the relationship between father and son. It's a love story in the purest sense as Chris tries to shield Christopher from the hardships they face, and it's instances like this that makes you think nepotism can be a good thing.
The younger Smith, who reportedly auditioned for the part, is precocious but not annoyingly so. He's inherited his parents' good looks and has impeccable comic timing, enlivening the gloomier stretches of the story.
Steve Conrad wrote the screenplay after executive procer Mark Clayman saw a "20/20" story on the real-life Gardner, and he litters the movie Gardner's path with nonstop obstacles, many of which are so improbable they must be true. Italian director Gabriele Muccino (whose film "The Last Kiss" was recently remade with Zach Braff) keeps a low profile, allowing the Smiths to carry the day.
"The Pursuit of Happyness" is an unexceptional film with exceptional performances and, if you're curious, takes its title's quirky spelling from a mural outside Christopher's Chinatown day-care center. There are worse ways to spend the holidays, and, at the least, it will likely make you appreciate your own circumstances.

You have a dream, you got to protect it.

"The Pursuit of Happyness" -- the title comes from a misspelled schoolhouse mural -- has a lot on its mind but mostly this: If America is about the promise of bettering oneself, why does it have to be so freaking hard? In the movie, Jefferson's Declaration of Independence words about happiness kept recurring to Chris Gardner. Every day, Christ had to work hard from morning till night, but still could hardly make a living. Chris saw a bunch of suits, mostly male, pouring out of the Dean Witter Reynolds brokerage firm in downtown San Francisco. They all looked 「happy,」 「Why not me? 「 Christ wondered. He did have an adorable boy, Christopher, but wife Linda was becoming a scarecrow of overworked anxiety. Finally, his wife left Christ because of life pressure, leaving him and her five-year-old son, Christopher. And naturally, Christ became a single father.
With the failure of his business, Christ had no money to pay for the rent, so they were driven away from the flat. They became homeless. They slept in asylum, subway station public bathroom or anywhere as a temporary shelter. The destitution of life was absolutely depressing, but for his son』s future, for his own belief, Christ never gave up and he still strongly believed that happiness would come one day if he worked hard enough today.
With his great efforts, Christ won a six-month internship at Dean Witter, but there was no pay at all. So on one hand, Christ had to work hard to make a living; on the other hand, he had to fight for his intern work, since only one of the twenty interns would succeed finally. Besides, he had to take good care of his son after day care. However, Christ made it with his amazing willpower.
Christ was unfortunate, for he got a wife who was not understandable at all (though she has her own difficulties) and was in bad luck with his business. But he was very fortunate also, for he got a son who was very thoughtful and, I think, tough life experiences always make a great person.
