奧斯汀(Austen Jane)
(1775.12.16,英格蘭 漢普郡 斯蒂文頓～1817.7.18,漢普郡 溫切斯特)
英國女作家。出身牧師家庭，其小說中的背景、人物和題材來自她所生活的小地主鄉紳及鄉村神職人員組成的世界。她最親密的伴侶是她的姊姊卡桑德拉。早期作品多是模仿時下文體之作，尤其是感傷小說。她針對當時英國中產階級習俗創作的六部喜劇式長篇小說有《理智與情感》(1811)、《傲慢與偏見》 (1813)、《曼斯菲爾德花園》(1814)、《愛瑪》(1815)、《勸導》(1817)和《諾桑覺寺》(1817年出版，但是提筆最早的一部)。她創造了自己生存年代英國中產階級生活的社會風情喜劇，作品以慧黠、真實、展現同情及簡潔風格著稱。透過描繪日常生活中的普通人，使小說具有鮮明的現代性質，她是第一人。她的小說都是以匿名的方式出版，其中兩部是在她41歲死後才出版，她可能死於艾迪生氏病。
